Quality of life and community in Southwest Bellevue

Those who live in Southwest Bellevue rave about its quality of life: the area’s beauty, the parks and walkability. But the reason they stay is the affinity they find with their neighbors. “The character of the city is all about diversity,” says Renee McGahan, a Realtor with Keller Williams Greater Seattle who has lived in the area on and off for over 20 years. “But what makes it great is the community. In that way, it almost feels like a neighborhood from the ’50s or ’60s, where you know your neighbors and talk to people in the park.”

Lakeside estates and condos near Downtown Bellevue

Stretching from the border of Downtown Bellevue to the hilly shores of Lake Washington and the valley of Kelsey Creek, Southwest Bellevue’s diversity of landscape also informs its diversity of homes. Condos, townhomes and modern craftsman-style single-family homes sit close to downtown, while larger estates with lake views enjoy privacy in the wooded hills of the neighborhood. “The neighborhoods near downtown are very community-oriented,” McGahan says. “It’s a little different closer to the water. Those buyers are looking for something a little different.” Further south near Interstate 405, first-time buyers can find more attainable prices on multifamily units. Those start in the mid-$400,000s, while prices for condos in the more urban areas of the neighborhood are closer to $700,000. As is the case across the Seattle area, prices for single-family houses have risen drastically. Smaller, older homes can start near $1.2 million, while the privacy and luxury of a waterfront house can cost up to $8 million.

Restaurants and bars on Bellevue’s Main Street

The neighborhood itself doesn’t have much in the way of restaurants or retail, but Main Street in Downtown Bellevue is within walking distance for many residents. In the community-oriented neighborhood, it’s common for residents to find their local restaurant or bar and get to know the employees. “I love going to Adrian’s and just going to sit at the bar,” McGahan says. “It’s a tequila bar and I don’t drink tequila, but the owner, Adrian, went to the trouble of getting peanut butter whiskey for me.” Grocery shopping is close by as well, with the Asian market H Mart and a Safeway each less than two blocks from Southwest Bellevue.

Surrey Downs neighborhood events

The subdivisions of Southwest Bellevue often come together to celebrate holidays and build community pride. One such example is Surrey Downs, which shuts down its neighborhood streets for a Halloween parade each year. “There are two entrances to Surrey Downs and every year there are A-frames at each, advertising the parade,” McGahan says. “The events like that are a big thing here.”
