A conveniently located west Chicago suburb
During the Apollo 17 mission, Eugene Cernan became the 11th human in history to walk on the moon – and as of 2023, he’s been the last person to walk on it since. Eugene came from a small village just 14 miles west of Chicago – Bellwood, a residential area with a hushed atmosphere and united community. Locals organize community-wide events that contribute to the area’s know-your-neighbor vibe, while proximity to Interstate 290 allows for a quick 15-minute drive to downtown Chicago.

Brick bungalows and well-maintained lawns
The village's architectural scene is comprised of Chicago-style bungalows and brick ranch-style homes, alongside two-story Georgian-inspired homes. Spacious yard lots are common, and connecting sidewalks make for easier walkability. Many stand-alone homes were built in the mid-to-late 1900s and are seeing interior renovation while retaining exterior architecture to stand out in the housing market. Walking along the community's tree-shaded sidewalks will take folks past well-maintained front yards, many of which are adorned with foliage and small flower gardens in the warmer months. The average home price here is $230,000, making it more affordable compared to surrounding communities like Melrose Park and Hillside. Investors will find the occasional 1,000-square-foot fixer-upper for $160,000, while the higher end of the market features 2,000 square-foot five-bedroom homes for $300,000.
