Berwick adds to The Edge to its rural, New England character
Settled by the English in 1631 for its location near the Salmon Falls River, Berwick’s history resembles many other rural places between Maine and New Hampshire. But the small town's burgeoning vibe makes it stand out. “We’re building a new downtown called The Edge. It’s located riverside along Sullivan Street,” says Nichole Fecteau, a real estate agent with The Masiello Group and Berwick local. “There will be 13 buildings for restaurants, shops, offices and apartments. A few businesses like Badwolfe Butcher & Deli are already open, but it won't be done until the end of 2025.” While the new city center is still developing, residents have plenty of restaurants to eat at, nature preserves to explore and community events to enjoy in the meantime.

Side-by-side Queen Annes and custom-built country estates
Berwick’s core is brimming with turn-of-the-century dwellings. Homebuyers will find three-bedroom Colonial Revivals and Queen Annes with wrap-around front porches. The wide, rural roads towards the town’s outskirts have midcentury ranch styles and Cape Cod cottages. Custom-built country estates have farmhouse-style facades or Colonial Revival architecture. They sit behind eastern hemlock trees on half-to-two-acre lots. From gravel driveways to two-car garages, houses here also have ample parking options for drivers. Buying a property in Berwick typically costs between $350,000 and $450,000, a range less than a York County home’s average $550,000.

Students in Berwick follow a unique school path
As a part of the Maine School Administrative District #60, students in Berwick follow a unique education track. First, they may attend Vivian E. Hussey Primary School for kindergarten through third grade and Eric L. Knowlton School for fourth and fifth grade. Both schools have an overall C-plus grade from Niche. Next, they may attend B-minus-graded Noble Middle School for sixth and seventh grade. For grades eight through 12, students can go to C-plus-graded Noble High, where they can join the Multiple Pathways Program, which has a lower student-to-teacher ratio, allowing for a more hands-on learning experience in the core curriculum.

A renovated athletic hub and Salmon Falls River fun
Memorial Field off Sweetser Street is the town’s athletic hub, featuring three baseball diamonds, a soccer field and a basketball court. The two playgrounds also provide plenty of activity for children watching their siblings play Little League games. “This park is currently undergoing updates, but it’s still open. There will be tennis courts here sometime in 2024,” says Fecteau. The town’s location near Salmon Falls River adds another recreation element, like the kayak launch on Rochester Street. Hikers and birdwatchers will enjoy the 86-acre Keay Brook Nature Preserve, where they’ll find a 1-mile path home to belted kingfisher habitats. Tucked behind the Berwick Public Library on Old Hill Pine Road, the Penny Pond Nature Trail is another popular 1-mile route. Its namesake waterway freezes every winter, making it perfect for ice skating. Thespians can catch a local production or a blues concert at Hackmatack Playhouse, a third-generation, family owned theatre in a 17th-century farmstead.

Berwick community events
With a Memorial Day Parade and a Holiday Parade, Berwick has a few celebrations where the high school band and retro cars travel across Saw Mill Hill and the Somersworth-Berwick Bridge. “We do a trunk-or-treat for Halloween and a music festival every summer in Sullivan Square. There’s almost too many events to name,” says Fecteau.
Berwick-local brews and Badwolfe Butcher
Though The Edge is incomplete, Berwick has several other establishments to visit. Coffee lovers can start their morning at Aroma Joe’s, a New England-based café known for cold brew and energy drinks. Founded in 2015, Corner Point Brewing Company makes over 33 beers on-site and serves a variety of bar bites, including flatbreads and paninis. Grocery shoppers can grab organic vegetables from Orange Circle Farm on Blackberry Hill Road and fresh sausage links from Badwolfe Butcher & Deli on Sullivan Street. They’ll find even more options less than 3 miles away at the Walmart Supercenter on High Street. Target and The Home Depot are also in the same area.

A future for walkers and New England cities nearby
“You won’t see many people walking around yet, but that will change when the downtown is done,” says Fecteau. Major thoroughfares like Maine State Route 9 and U.S. Route 202 span Berwick’s core, making city centers like Augusta and Concord a little over an hour away. Drivers can also take Salmon Falls Road 7 miles north to reach Rochester, the largest city in the seacoast region.
