An old street-car suburb just 7 miles from Downtown Bham
North Eastlake was originally designed as a sleepy suburb for steel industry workers moving to Birmingham during the mid-1800s; but by 1886, the neighborhood of just over 700 homes had become a recreation hub for the city. Its original bungalows and minimal traditional homes sit within walking distance of the 100-acre East Lake Park. Once home to a giant Ferris wheel and petting zoo, the park exists today as a beloved community hub, where neighbors meet up for evening walks and play afternoon cricket matches. “It has this large, stunning lake and is actually one of the largest municipal parks in Birmingham,” Justin Mundie says. Mundie, a local Realtor with eXp Realty, says,, “It’s really easy to get downtown from North Eastlake.” All residents have to do is hop on U.S. Highway 11 and drive a few miles south to arrive in the heart of Magic City.
1920s bungalows next to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport
North Eastlake’s grid pattern residential streets are sandwiched between Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport and Interstate 59. Most of the homes were built between the 1920s and 1930s. Craftsman bungalows and minimal traditionals sit side-by-side on tree-covered city blocks, with central alleys leading to detached backyard garages. Despite the barrier of trees around Village Creek, homes right next to I-59 experience high noise levels compared to the rest of the neighborhood. Most listings in North Eastlake range between $75,000 and $150,000, but some newly renovated homes with modern appliances and completely refurbished interiors can cost up to $225,000.
Downtown Bham is only 7 miles away
One of the biggest perks to living in North Eastlake is the direct access to major highways. The neighborhood sits at the crossroads of U.S. Route 11 and Interstate 59, just 7 miles north of Downtown Birmingham. Fixed route buses stop along Highway 11, but Mundie says it’s much faster to drive. “You’re lookin’ at a very short commute with little to no traffic” along I-59.
A new football stadium at Woodlawn High
Neighborhood kids attend Birmingham City Schools. Preschoolers can begin at Robinson Elementary and move on to Ossie Ware Middle after fifth grade. Woodlawn High is a public magnet school first established in 1922. To celebrate its 100th birthday, Woodlawn received over $8 million in alumni donations to build a new state-of-the-art football stadium which officially opened in 2023. All three schools score a C-minus on Niche.
A small commercial corridor along Highway 11
U.S. Route 11 becomes a sparse shopping and dining corridor through North Eastlake. Besides a few gas stations, a barber shop and Iglesia Mana Del Cielo, residents come here to find authentic Mexican cuisine and groceries at El Girasol. Other grocery items and household essentials are fewer than 2 miles down the road at Piggly Wiggly. With its gray-painted siding and little outdoor decoration, The World-Famous Airport Inn may not look like much, but since 1938, the one-room neighborhood bar has been the place for neighbors to come and watch college football, play pool or just catch up with each other.
East Lake Park extends over 100 acres
Expanding across 100 acres, East Lake Park offers plenty of outdoor recreation for people of all ages. Adults meet up at the cricket grounds to play afternoon matches with friends, while the youth football and cheerleading leagues practice on the field next door. There’s a small pool open during the summertime, but the park’s 45-acre man-made lake is the main water feature, with three fishing piers and a gravel loop trail. Next to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, The Southern Museum of Flight offers a unique look at the aviation history in and around Alabama.
