Set directly north of the Magic City, the historic neighborhood of Norwood has a reputation for being more than just a convenient commute. "Norwood is a historic neighborhood contracted in the 1930s," says Exit Justice Realty's broker, Bryan Harrell. "Many of the houses were built for the growing number of steelworkers in the area. The other half of the neighborhood was built for doctors working at the Carraway Hospital." As a result, Norwood's diversity has been a facet of its identity that goes back for decades. Recent growth has brought new neighbors to Norwood and a renewed sense of pride in the neighborhood, its homes and its history.

Historic homes outside the Uptown district
Wide front porches and brick columns face tree-lined streets that creep up and over the hills of North Birmingham. Sidewalks are standard on nearly all neighborhood streets, though in certain sections, they appear to be as old as some of the homes surrounding them. Most homes feature full lawns, backyards and private driveways. Though new construction isn't unheard of, scaffolding for renovation is a much more common sight as locals and new homeowners attempt to restore the classic charm of these historic homes. "In the last few years, many of the homes in the Norwood community have been renovated," explains Harrell. "The neighborhood is rapidly growing with the emergence of a thriving Uptown district." Craftsman-style homes make up most of the real estate, though ranch-style and split-level homes are occasionally available—1930s-constructed Craftsman start in the mid-$70,000s, with more recently built split-levels peaking in the high-$200,000s. A fully renovated historic foursquare can reach the mid-$400,000s.

A trolley stop turned historic trail
The historic tone that pervades Norwood even sets the foundation for Norwood Park, a linear stretch of greenery that pushes for 19 acres through the heart of Norwood, offering a view of historic homes on either side. The paved trail, which runs for 1.7 miles and features the Historic Norwood Trolley Stop, now occupies the site of the former trolley tracks.

Events from the active Norwood Neighborhood Association
The Norwood Neighborhood Association is active within the area, sponsoring and promoting community events like Easter Egg hunts, neighborhood cleanups and an annual Winter Wonderland at Norwood Park that includes food, music and pictures with Santa. The greater area of Birmingham itself is home to a variety of happenings, including the Sidewalk Film Festival, a showcase of films and filmmakers featuring screenings, Q&As and seminars.

Real life lessons at George W. Carver High
Students in Norwood can begin at Norwood Elementary School before enrolling at Malachai Wilkerson Middle School, both of which score a C-minus on Nitch. Finally, they'll attend C-scoring George W. Easy commutes and air travel
With downtown Birmingham just two miles south, Norwood has always been popular with locals who commute daily for work. "A huge part of the draw is that proximity to downtown," says Andrew Fair, a Realtor with Black Clover Realty who's served the area for ten years. "It's growing a lot." Nearby Interstate 20 and Interstate 65 make for convenient trips further afield, as does the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, located 4.5 miles northeast.
