As veterans returned home from the frontlines of World War II, the demand for suburban neighborhoods spiked despite the nation's low housing supply. Bismarck was no exception, so a resident-founded cooperative addressed the shortage by developing Highland Acres. The neighborhood brought about 400 houses to the city's northwestern side, making homeownership an achievable dream for returning soldiers and their families. Today, many homes have passed between generations, and new residents enjoy the tranquility and tight-knit community. "The neighborhood where we lived in prior to this, I wouldn't really have wanted my kids running the neighborhood," says Ashleigh Miller, current resident and administrative assistant at the State Historical Society of North Dakota. "But here, it's safe. I have no problem with them going out on their own to their friends' houses." In 2022, Highland Acres joined the National Register of Historic Places for its well-preserved, mid-19th-century architecture.
