Central Bench is a diverse, walkable neighborhood in Boise
Boise ’s Central Bench is a cultural melting pot, where you’ll find grocery stores and restaurants serving a variety of cuisines from around the world. Parks and attractions sit next to residential streets, and despite its suburban vibe, it’s easy to walk or bike to various points around the city. Longer trips are also convenient here, with Interstate 84 and Boise Airport both nearby.
Buyers can find ranch-style homes and townhouses are many price points
Ranch-style homes make up much of the inventory in Central Bench, often on small suburban lots dotted with leafy trees. Attached garages make parking convenient, although the neighborhood’s wide streets give you plenty of room for street parking. Townhouses are also common in the area. Pricing tends to vary based on size and type of home:
Single-family houses under 3,000 square feet typically cost between the upper $200,000s and the lower $700,000s.
Larger single-family houses fall between the mid-$900,000s and the lower $1.5 millions.
Townhouses typically range from the upper $200,000s to the lower $500,000s.
Global groceries and casual restaurants line nearby streets
If variety is the spice of life, Central Bench is the most flavorful neighborhood in Boise. “There are international markets like Afghan, Middle Eastern and Korean up in that corridor,” says Helen Law, an associate broker at Group One Sotheby’s International Realty with 25 years of experience. “It’s fascinating stuff and really good food. Funky restaurants, funky markets. There’s always something to discover.” You can visit spots like Alahmad Market and Kabul Market on Overland Road, or Orient Market on Emerald Street. Some of the small grocery stores have restaurants inside, like Food Land Market, which is locally famous for its shawarma. Other popular eateries in the neighborhood include Luciano’s Italian Restaurant and Big Bun Drive-In for a casual burger. Chain supermarkets like Albertsons and Fred Meyer are nearby, and the Boise Towne Square mall is just across the highway, with a mix of big-box stores.
Local parks offer sports, swimming and places to unwind
While Central Bench isn’t as close to the Foothills and the Greenbelt as other neighborhoods, it has its share of parks. For some outdoor fun, you can:
Head to Cassia Park for a game of tennis or a stroll around the walking paths
Visit Borah Park for a dip in the swimming pool or to grow something in the community garden
Bring your competitive spirit to Phillippi Park, where you can play tennis, basketball, volleyball and horseshoes
Grab your clubs for a round of golf at the private Hillcrest Country Club
And don’t worry. If you want to hike through the Foothills, the closest trailheads are just 15 minutes away.
Students choose from highly rated public and private school options
The Boise School District serves the neighborhood, and students might attend the highly rated Borah High School, which offers dual enrollment classes like intro to engineering, medical terminology and sociology. The district also offers open enrollment and magnet programs, but admission is not guaranteed. Bishop Kelly High School is a highly rated private option in the neighborhood, known for its championship sports teams and robust AP program.
Easy drives and bike rides connect the neighborhood to downtown
Getting around Boise is a breeze from Central Bench. “It’s just a hop, skip and a jump from downtown and from the airport,” Law says. “It’s a very accessible neighborhood and still very walkable.” Most homes in the neighborhood are within walking distance of some shops and restaurants. For trips outside the community, many people bike. Downtown Boise is about a 4-mile bike ride via Latah Street and the Boise River Greenbelt. If you prefer driving, it’ll take you about 10 minutes to get downtown, with a 3-mile drive along Rose Hill Street and Capitol Boulevard. You can easily hop on the highway with Interstate 84 and the Boise Connector bordering the neighborhood, and buses run along many of the major roads.
What to expect from airport noise in Central Bench
Because of the neighborhood’s location near the airport, plane noise can be a concern for some homeowners. “Closer to the freeway, you’re going to experience noise, because the freeway really is in the flight path of the airport,” Law says. “Most of the air traffic comes from south of the airport, but there is some over the freeway too.” Other than the airport noise in the community’s south end, Central Bench is a fairly quiet neighborhood where you won’t have too much noise to worry about.
