Buckingham is a residential neighborhood located near some of Bowie’s largest parks. Bowie’s location between Washington and Baltimore makes it a popular destination for commuters. Buckingham has primarily homes from the 1960s, including Cape Cod cottages, Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes. Quarter-acre yards are shaded by oak and maple trees, and residents can also enjoy the outdoors at Buckingham Park, a central green space with a baseball diamond. However, the large outdoor attraction here is Whitemarsh Park, a 182-acre space featuring sports fields, trails and the Bowie Playhouse, which hosts community theater productions. Schools in the area, like Kenilworth Elementary, Benjamin Tasker Middle and Bowie High, are all within a mile and a half of the neighborhood. Nearby shopping options include grocery stores like Harris Teeter and Giant, and the city’s only mall, Bowie Town Center, is less than 5 miles south. U.S. Route 50 and Maryland Route 3 provide access to Washington and Baltimore, both of which are reachable in 45 minutes to an hour. Public transit options include WMATA bus stops and a nearby MARC train station at Bowie State University that offers a 30-minute ride to downtown Washington.
