Why people choose to live in the North End
On the northern edge of Bridgeport, the North End is a quiet suburb. It has parks with disc golf courses and wooded hiking trails as well as easy access to shops and restaurants. The neighborhood, known for its comparatively low home prices, is close to Sacred Heart University and about a 90-minute commute to Manhattan. The community attracts a lot of students, professionals and multi-generational families.

North End’s lower home prices make up for Bridgeport’s property taxes
Most of the area's homes are Cape Cods, though there’s a smattering of ranch-style homes, raised ranches and colonial-inspired homes. Bridgeport has one of the nation’s highest property tax rates, but the median sale price in North End is in the upper $300,000s, much lower than neighboring communities. West Trumbull ’s median is in the low $600,000s and Stratfield Village ’s is in the mid $700,000s. North End has similar prices to neighborhoods to its south and west, like Reservoir-Whiskey Hill and Brooklawn-Saint Vincent. North End homes are appreciating in value over time, though. “Back in 2019, you’d be able to find property for $250,000, but now the average purchase price is about $400,000,” says Santiago Jaraba, a broker at Whitestone Real Estate Group who has sold homes here for five years. “So it’s a great place to buy, either to invest or just to move in.”
These days, homes that need major renovations occasionally drop into the mid $200,000s, but most start in the mid $300,000s and max out in the low $600,000s. Even the waterfront homes ringing Lake Forest, which often have private docks, fall into this price range. Townhouses and condos start in the mid $100,000s, but condos max out around the upper $200,000s and townhouses can climb to the mid $300,000s. “For the cost, the real estate in North End is a great value,” says Antonio Salerno of RE/MAX Heritage. Most residents own their homes, but there’s also a strong rental presence.

Public schools, school choice and private options, SHU
Bridgeport Public Schools serves 19,000 students. Within North End, students might attend John Winthrop School from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade before moving to Central High School. The district has a regional aquaculture center where high schoolers learn seafood science and marine ecology. Class sometimes takes place in a 25-foot lobster boat. Bridgeport families can apply to magnet programs, request in-district transfers or join the state’s open choice program for regional options. Seats are limited, so they’re not guaranteed. They’re typically assigned through lottery and space availability, though sibling preference can play a role. Nearby private options include the top-rated Bridgeport Hope School for kindergarten through eighth grade and the highly rated Kolbe Cathedral Catholic High School.
Sacred Heart University is New England’s second-largest independent Catholic university, offering over 80 degree programs.

Parks offer hiking, athletic spaces and dog park, private Forest Lake
As part of Bridgeport, the self-proclaimed “Park City” with 1,800 acres of parkland, North End has plenty of access to the outdoors. The 74-acre Elton Rogers Woodland Park includes wooded walking trails. Kids explore the playground and splash pad at Puglio Park, while Veterans Memorial Park has a dog park and disc golf course. Lake Forest residents with daily launch passes can use their kayaks, go fishing and swim at the lake’s private beach.

Local eateries and big retailers on Main Street, Trumbull Mall nearby
Main Street is lined with retailers like Marshalls and Petco. While there are a few chain restaurants like Red Lobster and Kentucky Fried Chicken, the North End shines through its abundant local restaurants, including:
Merritt Canteen, which has served burgers, hot dogs and shakes here since 1942
Drumstik Bar-B-Q, which specializes in Southern comfort food
Galaxy Diner Restaurant, known for its classic diner food since 1981
Main Street Creamery, a year-round spot for ice cream
Salons and banks sit along Main Street, and residents can get groceries at Stop & Shop or Price Rite Marketplace. For more shopping options, Trumbull Mall is less than 2 miles away in West Trumbull. It has dozens of retailers like Target, GameStop and JCPenney. Downtown Bridgeport offers restaurants and entertainment venues about 4 miles away.

Commuters enjoy easy highway access and nearby Metro-North station
From the North End, it takes minutes to hop onto Merritt Parkway, state Route 8/25 or Interstate 95. “I think the North End offers a great location because it’s near the highways and we’re only an hour away from New York City,” Jaraba says. The drive to Manhattan is about 65 miles, but can take as many as three hours at peak travel times, so careful planning is important. From Downtown Bridgeport’s Metro-North Railroad station, trains reach New York City’s Penn Station in just under two hours. The Westchester County Airport in White Plains is a 45-minute drive. St. Vincent’s Medical Center is about a mile away, and it’s about 4 miles to Bridgeport Hospital.
