Those familiar with the history of New York City might recognize Woodstock as one of the villages that fused to create the Bronx more than a century ago. Nonhistory buffs might still know its name from seeing it at the local library, while others simply see it as an established residential enclave tucked between some of the highlights of the South Bronx. “People come to the area for proximity to Manhattan at a lower cost,” says Tano Holmes, a real estate broker with Century 21 Milestone Realty who’s specialized in the Bronx for nine years. “You’ve got access to the 2 and 5 subway lines, a nice park, and Third Avenue is a main commercial strip, which is nearby.” Though Woodstock is a relatively quiet section of the Bronx when compared to the blocks closest to Yankee Stadium, its high concentration of residents and nearby recreation spaces mean the community enjoys its own collection of small businesses and salsa-serenaded block parties between busier New York City events and commuter hubs. Woodstock’s residential blocks are characterized by the mix of tall apartment buildings and shorter, near treetop-level walk-ups and single-family homes popular through much of the Bronx.
