Former farm community turned vibrant Philadelphia suburb

Brookhaven, once acres of farmland, became a thriving post-war suburban town with highly rated schools and strong local businesses. Just 20 miles from Philadelphia, this walkable community has longstanding restaurants, amenity-rich parks and community events, like its annual holiday parades. Longtime resident and Realtor Karen Dauber with Long and Foster Real Estate grew up in Brookhaven and says, “My parents moved here in the ‘40s. I remember waking up to the roosters crowing. It took off during the Baby Boom and I watched it grow from a farm community to what it is today.”

Buyers will find midcentury homes, rowhomes and contemporary condos

During its midcentury growth a variety of single-family homes were built between the 1940s and 1970s. A mix of bungalows, split-levels, Cape Cod and Colonial Revival homes are located on approximately quarter-acre lots, offering plenty of yard space even with proximity to neighbors. There are also Colonial-inspired brick rowhomes available at a lower price point and recently built condo units that offer luxury amenities. Established homes cost between $175,000 and $350,000, while rowhomes cost between $145,000 and $250,000. Contemporary condos typically cost between $275,000 and $300,000.

Residents will find the heart of the community on Edgmont Avenue

“The big thing about Brookhaven is it’s walkable, which is very important,” says Dauber, “All the neighborhoods have sidewalks that lead right to the business district.” Whether residents walk or drive, they can find everything they need along Edgmont Avenue. Brookhaven is home to several large shopping centers with big-box stores like ALDI, ShopRite and GIANT among several others. Don’t want to leave your car? Grab your groceries and a snack from the drive-thru at Swiss Farms. There are dozens of options for dining out here, including local favorite Tom Jones, a family-run restaurant serving the community for decades, known for its famous Blue Ribbon Special breakfast platter. Route 352 Diner is just a block away and another hot spot for breakfast and lunch.

The community offers easy access to Philadelphia

Interstate 95 is less than two miles away from Brookhaven, allowing for convenient transportation. Via I-95, residents are just 15 miles from Wilmington and 20 miles from Philly. The Philadelphia International Airport is about 8 miles away, making it easy to get beyond the area. For public transportation, residents can head to Eddystone, where there’s a SEPTA light rail station that connects residents to the city. Apart from offering ease of commuting, Dauber says the most important thing to know is the outpouring of support residents offer each other. “There was a fire at one of the condo buildings at 7 p.m. They opened the community center and people ran to the stores to bring donations. That’s just the type of community this is. We look out for each other.”
