Brooklyn brownstone neighborhood rooted in Black history
Brooklyn’s most populous neighborhood, Bedford–Stuyvesant, also known as Bed-Stuy, incorporates a vast residential area and includes subsections like the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District. Blocks of oversized Italianate and Romanesque Revival townhomes set the stage for a vibrant Black community that has had an outsized influence on contemporary culture. Though impacted by economic decline and discriminatory housing practices in the second half of the 20th century, Bed-Stuy has re-emerged in recent decades. Today, the neighborhood is also popular with young families and creative professionals from around the world. They benefit from the area's tranquility and relative proximity to Manhattan. A wide selection of trendy restaurants and bars reflect the neighborhood’s growing diversity but also hold true to its deeply entrenched Black heritage.

Mexican Japanese fusion eateries join Southern soul food mainstays
Bed Stuy has a robust offering of restaurants and bars that reflect its multiculturalism. With several locations throughout the neighborhood, Peaches is a staple putting a modern spin on Southern comfort classics. “I always like the shrimp po’boy,” says Perri DeFino, a local resident and agent with Compass. Malcolm X Boulevard features unique spots like decades-old French bistro Chez Oskar and popular dive bar Turtles. Bed Stuy Fish Fry is another well-established neighborhood favorite. Brick oven pizza institution Saraghina and live music joint LunÀtico hold sway over Lewis Avenue. A recent addition to the area, FROG is a distinct yet laid-back wine bar drawing in Manhattan crowds. Commercial stretch Tompkins Avenue has an endless array of independent retailers, fusion cuisine eateries like WARUDE and trendy coffee shop Corto. The Tompkins Avenue Merchant Association organizes summer block parties. To the south, Fulton Street is lined with grocery stores like Super Foodtown. Several big box stores and chain restaurants include Shake Shack. To the North, Broadway has a FOOD BAZAAR. A Home Depot can be found in the middle of the neighborhood.

Well-preserved single and multifamily townhomes
“The beautiful brownstone architecture with intact detailing is probably the biggest draw to the neighborhood,” says DeFino. Though rentals are prevalent, there are plenty of properties to buy as Bed-Stuy becomes an increasingly desirable place to live. Highly ornate Victorian-style brownstones are the norm and range from $1.2 million to $3.5 million, depending on size and condition. Many of these homes include separate units that can be rented out while homeowners still live on-site. Smaller postwar townhomes start at $750,000. One bedrooms in newer condo buildings and updated co-ops go for between $450,000 to $850,000. Prices tend to get higher toward the west though carefully preserved homes in the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District fetch a premium.

Its cultural art center includes a media lab. Toward the east, Saratoga Park also has a dog area and well-manicured lawns. Jackie Robinson Park and Star Spangled are among several playgrounds sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. Restoration and Marcy plazas play host to numerous community events such as the Winter Wonderland holiday market, featuring local vendors.
