A Philly suburb with a touch of charm
Broomall offers residents the comforts of suburban living amidst a touch of historic charm. This community of 11,000 is 10 miles from downtown Philadelphia, making it far enough from the city to enjoy peace and quiet but close enough to access urban conveniences. “Broomall is a beautiful area that is very family oriented, with good schools and lots of shopping,” says Debbie Disciascio, a Realtor with Long & Foster who has been selling homes in the area for 20 years. “And, Broomall has the lowest tax bracket in Delaware County.”
Broomall was originally part of Marple Township, which was settled in 1684. As the town grew, so did the need for a second mail station. The Broomall Post Office was built in 1870, creating the new community. Traces of the community’s 340-year colonial history can be seen at the Thomas Massey House, one of the oldest English Quaker homes in the state. The historic building, circa 1696, is a beloved landmark.

Old and new neighborhoods
Broomhall consists of several housing developments established in the 1950s that feature a variety of single-family homes with prices starting around $370,000 for older, renovated houses and over $800,000 for new construction. On the north side of town, one finds primarily colonial architecture and Cape Cods. The southern section of Broomall features ranch-style, split-level and midcentury modern houses. Loomis Elementary School is recognized as a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Paxon Hollow Middle School offers a gifted program for students. Marple Newtown High School offers advanced placement and gifted programs. The school has a 96% graduation rate and an average SAT score of 1220.

Green spaces, swimming and sports
Broomall offers plenty of green space and sports opportunities. Kent Park borders Darby Creek. This is 10-acre park is popular with hikers and anglers. It also features a playground, pavilion and a dog park. Veterans Memorial Park offers a 1/3-mile paved trail that wanders through wide-open fields. Walkers can rest by the gazebo or contemplate the park’s stone memorial. Families and friends often gather here to grill burgers and play horseshoes while the kids tumble around on the padded play area. During the summer, locals head to the Lawrence Park Swim Club, where kids can dart down a water slide or jump off the diving board. Marple Sports Arena offers year-round indoor sports activities, including roller hockey, basketball, soccer and ice hockey. The South Marple Little League provides baseball and softball to more than 300 children in the area.

Shopping, dining and music
When it comes to shopping, there are several retail centers around town. Shoppers can pick up household items from HomeGoods and The Home Depot or restock the larder with groceries from Amazon Fresh and GIANT. Broomall has plenty of restaurant options for the hungry. Diners can grab a steakburger and milkshake from Freddy’s, a vintage-style regional chain. Broomall’s staple restaurant, the Original Thunderbird Steakhouse, is known for its pizza, hoagies and award-winning cheesesteaks. In summer, residents might head east to The Mann Center for the Performing Arts, located in West Fairmount Park, for a night out. The outdoor venue features top musical acts and is the summer home of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Broomall's busy calendar
In April, the Broomall Fire Department sponsors its annual Fire Company Carnival. Thrilling amusement rides and live music add to the fun as attendees test their skills at carnival games and enjoy the food court. St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church has sponsored an annual Greek Affair for over 40 years. The well-attended September event features Greek food and traditional folk dancing exhibits. On Thanksgiving morning, the Thomas Massey House holds its annual car show, displaying hundreds of classic automobiles on its grounds. During the summer, the venue features a Living History Sunday exhibit demonstrating everyday life 300 years ago.
Transportation
Interstate 476 runs north and south through Broomall, intersecting with PA Route 3. This allows for convenient commuting to Philadelphia, a straight shot down Route 3. Philadelphia International Airport is 15 miles south via I-476. Bus service is available. This is a car-dependent neighborhood.
