Midcentury Milwaukee suburban living
Many Bucks fans in the Milwaukee area are used to the expression “Fear the Deer,” but residents have little to fear in the quaint suburb of Brown Deer. This neighborhood offers all one would expect from a midcentury community while also being a Damian Lillard logo shot (roughly 10 miles) from downtown Milwaukee. Hugging the easy bends of the Milwaukee River, the small village of Brown Deer was founded as a mainly agricultural community. As World War II brought industry and expansion to almost all corners of the country, the community became much more populous and more suburban. Over the following decades, it became a hub for commuters driving into Milwaukee for work, and as of 2000, over 40% of Brown Deer’s residents were driving into the city for their jobs. Low housing prices are a big appeal of the neighborhood to many home buyers, as even with multiple golf courses and mansions, home prices are less than the rest of Milwaukee on average.

Travel and commutes
Bus lines run on Brown Deer Road and 76th Street, but travel by car is how the neighborhood generally gets around. “Most residents commute to Milwaukee for work; Brown Deer is one of the first communities that feels like it's outside of the Milwaukee center,” says Lindsay Czisny, Realtor with Shorewest Realtors, who has sold almost 90 homes all over the Milwaukee area. “It has great proximity to the interstates and other major roads.” Green Bay Avenue, 76th Street and Interstate 43 offer Brown Deer residents three different routes to access all that the heart of Cream City offers.

Hot market, cool prices
Single-story ranchers with brick- and stone-accented facades are a common option for homebuyers, though you’ll also find a handful of split-level houses among them. “I love the yard sizes there; Brown Deer allows more room to breathe and garden than most of Milwaukee,” Czisny says. “The houses have charm; most were built in the 50s and onwards, so they’re not too old, but old enough to have character.” Residents can also enjoy riverside living in one of the neighborhood’s condo complexes. Yet another style of living in Brown Deer is mansions on multi-acre lots occupying the forest west of Milwaukee Country Club near Pelican Lane. Smaller three or less-bedroom ranch-style builds can be found for under or around $200,000, while four-plus bedroom new traditional mansions can run over $1.5 million.

Historic local eats and goods
Larry’s Market is Milwaukee’s original specialty food shop, selling Wisconsin artisanal cheeses and fine foods. Regulars rely on the take-out menu’s signature sandwiches and salads. Across the street, Kurt Schulz Delicatessen and Pastry Shoppe is another popular deli in Brown Deer, with fresh coffee and pastries behind the counter and a wood-paneled seating area. Or enjoy upscale, traditional French cuisine at Pastiche Bistro. As school lets out for the summer, Brown Deer Farmers Market pops up on Wednesdays between mid-June and October. Farm-fresh goods and produce fill the stalls, and visitors can enjoy live entertainment while they shop. There are also a handful of national retailers in Brown Deer, such as Walmart, Aldi and Burlington, with a Menards and a Best Buy just outside the neighborhood in either direction.

Forests, green spaces and recreation
Brown Deer has a few modest parks within its boundaries, including AC Hanson Park, which features a playground and connects to Milwaukee’s 135-mile Oak Leaf Trail. Just outside the neighborhood, you’ll find larger green spaces such as Brown Deer Park, with a sledding hill and a Tudor-style boathouse overlooking Brown Deer Park Pond. Also located in the community are The University Club of Milwaukee and Milwaukee Country Club, two of the premier golf courses in Milwaukee County.

School District of Brown Deer
The School District of Brown Deer serves the area, and many students attend Brown Deer Elementary, Middle and High Schools. The elementary receives a C-plus grade from Niche, while the middle/high school earns a B-minus. Brown Deer Middle/High School, which serves students in grades 6 through 12, features an Advanced Placement Program that offers calculus, physics, studio art and more.
