Classic architecture in Brooklyn’s Midwood section

With its white Greek Corinthian columns and wrought iron balcony, the brick mid-rise looks like a page out of the antebellum south. Except 1500 Ocean Parkway is a co-op building smack dab in the bustling Midwood section of Brooklyn. Built in 1940, there are 72 units in the six-story building landscaped with evergreens. Amid the tree-lined Ocean Parkway, the co-op is in the Midwood neighborhood, known for its suburban urban charm and diversity.

Modern style with character

1500 Ocean Parkway offers a range of living spaces from one to three bedrooms. Many units have been renovated, incorporating modern amenities while maintaining their original character. The units often have a mix of original details and modern updates. Many kitchens have been renovated with granite countertops and subway tile backsplashes, and ample cabinet space. Bathrooms often feature updated fixtures. The combination of prewar elements built-in shelving with contemporary finishes adds a special touch.

Building amenities

Pricing of the co-op units vary depending on the condition. A two-bedroom unit with one bathroom was sold in 2024 for $399,000. A completely remodeled two-bedroom two bath unit was sold in 2023 for $515,000. There’s an elevator, laundry facilities and a live-in superintendent. Lockers and cages are available for additional storage and a bike room for cyclists. A package room helps secure deliveries.

Living spaces feature arch doorways and large living rooms

Prewar details are the highlights of the living spaces. Soaring ceilings, archways and hardwood floors are found throughout. The rooms are oversized with foyers and separate dinettes. The bathrooms have separate showers, a detail of a bygone era. The spacious living rooms are great for entertaining or creating a separate home office space. Some units have up to 11 windows with multiple exposures, flooding the spaces with natural light, giving the space a light airy feel. Midwood is becoming popular with buyers due to its affordability, said Rebecca Goldberg of Douglas Elliman in Sheepshead Bay. “Midwood is very desirable,” she says. “The younger generation is moving in.”

City living with a suburban feel

Stroll down the sidewalk or bike ride down Ocean Parkway’s bicycle lane for a sense of Brooklyn living. There are built-in boards for checkers and chess players along the parkway where there are benches to relax on. Midwood is renowned for its tree-lined streets with a combination of suburban tranquility and urban convenience. The neighborhood is known for its kosher establishments, including Pomegranate Supermarket, a gourmet kosher grocery store. Di Fara Pizza is a famous New York pizzeria that draws huge crowds. For groceries, Kings Gourmet Food and Domino Supermarket are near the building. For recreation buffs, Friends Field nearby has facilities for soccer, baseball and tennis. Colorful equipment abounds at the Kolbert Playground providing family fun.

Trains, buses and automobiles

1500 Ocean Parkway is closest to the Avenue P station that’s served by the F line. The Avenue M station that’s served by the Q line is also close by. The Bay Ridge - Kings Plaza bus line is at the intersection of Avenue N and East 5th Street, connecting other parts of Brooklyn. The building's location near major thoroughfares like Ocean Parkway and Kings Highway allows for easy access throughout Brooklyn and beyond.
