A Midwood prewar co-op with a pleasantly unexpected lobby
Clad in bulky red brick, 918 East 14th St. is a six-story prewar co-op with a welcome surprise: the grandiose, albeit dated, entrance hall. Judging by its humble edifice (many asymmetries exist due to masonry being replaced at different times with various blocks), one wouldn’t guess there is an Edwardian-like interior in the lobby of this nearly 100-year-old building. The great room is decorated with elaborately painted tin ceilings, white, red and black terrazzo tiles and a series of wide arched doorways. These prewar touches set the tone, providing a glimpse of what’s to come in the 59 units. (Approximately one-third of the apartments are rentals.) Many units have been sporadically updated with well-maintained original architectural details. The accessibly priced building is set in a convenient Midwood location just three blocks from Avenue J, a busy retail and dining hub.
Roomy layouts with elegant formal rooms and ample closet space
Dating back to 1928, the floorplans are big (especially compared to new-build condominiums in the area). Layouts vary but typically feature great rooms and large bedrooms split by a salon-like foyer. Larger units have more formal, divided spaces, namely separate dining rooms and kitchens; in smaller residences, the square footage is more free-flowing, with open kitchens and combined living/dining areas. Despite the scale, each home has numerous windows, bringing abundant natural light. Many of the apartments have been renovated over the years (both by management and owners); some still have well-maintained original features, like wood parquet flooring, while others have been completely gut-renovated with new kitchens and bathrooms. Steam heat radiators and wall-through air-conditioning units appear throughout.
The co-op's units range from one to three bedrooms. One-bedrooms, averaging 750 square feet, feature a formal foyer with either a massive walk-in closet or two standard closets, an eat-in kitchen, and a living area big enough to fit a standard dining table and chairs; the most recent sale closed at $322,000 in September 2024. Two-bedrooms, spanning between 800 and 1,000 square feet, have split layouts with long- salon-like entries, a living area with an open kitchen and bedrooms at either end of the apartment; the most recent transaction in July 2024 netted $399,000. All three-bedrooms have two bathrooms (one- and two-bedrooms only have one), a large, separate eat-in kitchen, and a walk-in closet in each bedroom; the latest sale in April 2019 closed at $599,000.
Basic amenities and part-time service
The co-op has an elevator, a live-in superintendent and part-time maintenance staff. Not unlike many prewar buildings in the area, 918 East 14th St. doesn’t offer the stacked amenities spaces found in new-build condominiums concentrated along Ocean Parkway. However, it does have the essentials, which make everyday life a bit easier. This includes the lower-level laundry facilities outfitted with multiple folding tables and chairs. (Some renovated ground floor units have in-unit washer dryers.) The same subterranean floor has a bike room. There is also an in-house parking garage, but it is waitlisted. Nevertheless, Midwood’s side streets are known for moderately easy-to-find street parking.
A community-driven neighborhood near Brooklyn’s largest park
From elementary school to college, the neighborhood is home to many schools, including Brooklyn College, public middle school P.S. 99 and Midwood High School. Meanwhile, the area is home to many centers of worship and schools of varying faiths, some of these include East Midwood Jewish Center, Makki Masjid Muslim Community Center and the private all-girls preschool Masores Bais Yaakov School. The area is also home to Brooklyn's major hospitals, both Maimonides Medical Center and Mount Sinai Brooklyn, and many smaller, private practices. Meanwhile, residents can shop at local grocery markets, including kosher grocery store Moisha's, Punjab Grocery & Halal Meat, and ShopRite. Not far from all the hubbub, 530 acres of green space await at Marine Park, Brooklyn’s largest park. Split into two sections, the park has a Salt Marsh and preservation center and the recreational area, which includes an 18-hole golf course, 15 miles of hiking trails and nearly 60 courts and fields for sports.
Fewer than three blocks from the subway
Door-to-turnstile, 918 East 14th St. is a 3-minute walk to the Avenue J station, which provides access to the Q and B trains. The subway takes about 50 minutes to reach midtown Manhattan. Nearby major thoroughfares — Ocean Parkway, Flatbush Avenue and Kings Highway — make reaching the rest of Brooklyn and Manhattan easy. There is also an express bus — the BM3 — that gets Midwood residents to Manhattan in 45 minutes.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
