A mid-rise prewar co-op in eclectic Midwood
Anshel House, the six-story, 53-unit brick co-op in central Brooklyn’s Midwood, sits on a block that is as eclectic as the surrounding neighborhood. The tree-lined street contains a hodgepodge of structures, including single-family colonials fronted by porches, brick townhomes, boxy midcentury apartment buildings and flashy contemporary houses.
Designed in 1937 by architect J.W. Sherman, the building’s marketing materials promised prospective tenants the latest features and amenities, including colored bathroom tiles with matching fixtures, clothes hampers, incinerators and an elevator. Its lobby, still quite striking, features oversized mirrors, a large arched entrance to a central stairway and a terrazzo floor in a burnt orange, white and grey basketweave pattern.
The surrounding area, framed by busy commercial corridors, offers a diversity similar to that of 18th Street, with a bubble tea shop and a Georgian restaurant mingling with kosher markets, a Turkish shish kebab hall and fast food spot Raising Cane’s.
Studios to two-bedrooms with high ceilings, built-ins and foyers
Homes in the co-op include studios to two-bedrooms. Studios 550 square feet or more list for up to $195,000. One-bedrooms 650 square feet and higher sell for as much as $349,000. Two-bedrooms measuring up to 1,200 square feet command $365,000 or more.
The apartments have generous proportions and include many prewar features, such as inlaid hardwood floors, 9-foot ceilings, arched doorways, built-ins and picture rail molding. Many units have foyers, dining areas and windowed kitchens and bathrooms.
A live-in super and shared laundry room
The building has a live-in super and shared laundry facilities. Subletting is allowed after three years with board approval. Pets are not permitted.
Central Midwood near area schools, shops and a large park

Stores and services within a several-block radius include Planet Fitness, Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx. Midwood institution Di Fara Pizza is a 20-minute walk directly north. Marine Park, which contains protected grasslands and salt marshes as well as tennis and pickleball courts, playgrounds, a golf course and nature center is about a 10-minute drive southeast. James Madison High School is a 12-minute walk from the building and Brooklyn College is a 10-minute drive. Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital is eight blocks east on Kings Highway and Mount Sinai Brooklyn is about a 10-minute drive.
Express trains to Manhattan, buses along avenues and the Belt Parkway to the south
Public transit options include the B and Q trains and Kings Highway and East 16th Street, which can be reached on foot in less than 10 minutes. The commute to Midtown is about 50 minutes on the subway or by car. Buses run along Kings Highway for points east and west, and Ocean and Coney Island avenues for connection to areas north and south. Ocean Parkway is a major artery nearby that connects to the Belt Parkway, which provides access to Staten Island via the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and north Brooklyn and Queens and Long Island to the east. Travel time to JFK Airport is about 30 minutes.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
