Situated on a quiet residential block, Archer Cooperative is in good company with other midcentury apartment towers; additionally, the block is lined with half a dozen duplexes with driveways and a handful of wood-framed single-family bungalows. Completed in 1960, the unassuming six-story building is clad in red bricks and punctuated by white-framed casement windows. For those looking for a good deal in the east Bronx, this co-op offers spacious, multi-room apartments starting below $150,000. The well-maintained development provides essential amenities and part-time service with accordingly low maintenance fees.

Roomy midcentury layouts with ample storage space

Eighty-four residences across six stories range from one- to three-bedrooms. Apartments don’t come on the market often, only one or two a year. Designed in 1960, the apartments have eat-in kitchens, numerous closets and just one bathroom (regardless of the unit size). Floor plans feature formal rooms, including salon-like foyers, designated dining areas (about a third have full-sized dining rooms)and generously proportioned living rooms. The building was designed around a courtyard with multiple windows in each room to provide abundant natural light. Unit #5J, a 750-square-foot one-bedroom with a renovated kitchen and bathroom and original hardwood flooring, sold for $129,000 in the last quarter of 2019. Basic amenities include a parking garage

The elevator building has a live-in superintendent and part-time maintenance staff. On the lower level, residents can find laundry facilities with folding tables and wire baskets on wheels. The same subterranean floor houses the parking garage, which offers competitive monthly rates (and is currently waitlisted). Named after the affordable housing complex built by MetLife in 1938, the neighborhood is mainly known for its midrise condominiums and rental towers. Daily necessities include City MD Urgent Care, Ellie's Diner, Macy’s and Walgreens. At the center of the locale, residents can find Metropolitan Oval, a roundabout surrounding the grand “Fantasia” fountain, featuring Art Deco-style sculptures of bathing beauties. The residential enclave is peppered with petite, street-side parks, often including a few benches, picnic tables and not much more. Archer Cooperative sits on the edge of the area, outside the Parkchester North and Parkchester South, on a residential side street. Residents can shop at local grocery stores, including Foodtown, Key Food and CTown.

Less than 10 minutes from the subway

Door-to-turnstile, Archer Cooperative is less than half a mile from Parkchester station, which services the 6 train and 6 express train on weekdays during peak hours. For those traveling by car, multiple major thoroughfares — Brown River Parkway, Bruckner Expressway and the Cross Bronx Expressway — make getting around the Bronx easy and to Manhattan manageable.
