Prewar co-op that’s convenient for Manhattan commuters
A housing boom followed the extension of the R line (originally called the Fourth Avenue line) into Bay Ridge in the early 1900s, including the six-story Castle Court in 1927. Though the co-op’s history is lost to time, its regal name, decorative brown brick facade and Art Deco lobby hint at its early status and desirability, just steps from the R station. This elevator building’s original allure may have faded long ago, but its 82 one- and two-bedroom apartments are well-maintained. Margaret Calarco, a Douglas Elliman agent, has sold here in the past. “Are there nicer buildings in Bay Ridge? Yes, but for that location it’s a nice building.” It also represents a good value, and Calarco adds how one client chose it for its commutability to Manhattan and apartment renovation updates.
One- and two-bedroom units that offer a good value
Most units are one-bedrooms that range between 500 and 834 square feet, but the majority tend toward the smaller end. Two-bedrooms offer between 700 and 978 square feet. Prewar commonalities include nine-foot ceilings, large windows, parquet floors, radiators and windowed bathrooms. Beyond that, some appear to have been minimally updated since 1927, while others have entirely new bathrooms with shower stalls and decorative tiles and open kitchens with dishwashers, stainless-steel appliances and built-in microwaves. Due to the small spaces here, it’s not uncommon to find one-bedrooms where the entire kitchen is along one wall. Bathrooms also tend to be a tight squeeze in the smaller units.
One-bedrooms lack foyers but some bedrooms can fit at least a queen-sized bed. Kitchens in two-bedrooms are slightly larger with a galley layout and a window at the end, with space for a small dining area between the kitchen and living room. Bathrooms provide a bit more space, but bedrooms aren’t much bigger. Air conditioning is limited to window units and fire escapes serve as outdoor space. Even though the board allows sublets after two years, rentals are in the minority. Units facing Fourth Avenue, especially on the ground floor, look out onto the bus and train station, so residents lose the view to prevent passersby from peeping in. In 2024, a one-bedroom sold for $279,000 and a two-bedroom went for $412,000.
Common laundry room and small courtyard
The grand Art Deco lobby is a glimpse into an earlier era, where high ceilings trimmed in crown molding accommodate an arcade of gray columns perched on marble bases. These in turn complement the faded beige-and-white checkered floor tile bordered with gray marble baseboard. A small paved courtyard behind the building provides a respite from the noise of Fourth Avenue. There’s a laundry room since most units lack washers/dryers and a small gym for an additional fee. Storage units and a bike room are also an additional fee. Pets are allowed but limited to smaller breeds. Amenities are rounded out by a live-in super and a video intercom system for security. Maintenance is low and includes all utilities except for electricity.
Residential section on busy street that’s close to Bay Ridge shopping and dining
Castle Court is located right on Fourth Avenue, a main Bay Ridge thoroughfare. This section is mostly residential apartment buildings with a smattering of medical offices. The nearby avenues of Third and Fifth are better options for shopping and dining, with the likes of Tanoreen, a Michelin-guide restaurant that’s a destination for its Middle Eastern fare, just a block away on Third. Greenhouse Cafe is nearby, a longtime neighborhood spot for casual American, and yes, some tables are located in a greenhouse setting. There are a number of Yemeni restaurants over on Fifth, plus Cup of Joe, an independent coffee shop, and Gino’s, a decades-old haunt for red gravy Italian dishes. Nearby supermarkets include chains such as CTown and Food Emporium, and local specialty providers like Balady Halal Foods for Middle Eastern goods.
R train station and bus stop are in front of building
The entrance to the 77th Street R train is literally in front of the building, along with a bus stop for the B4, which travels between Bay Ridge and Sheepshead Bay. For drivers, Castle Court is equidistant between the Belt Parkway and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Commuters to lower Manhattan also have the option to catch the NYC Ferry from American Veterans Memorial Pier to Pier 11/Wall Street; express ferries make the trip in 20 minutes.
Noise is a factor
Apartments facing Fourth Avenue are going to hear a cacophony of car and bus traffic.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
