Residential neighborhood near MIT
The lifeblood of The Port, a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of Cambridge, lies in its residential properties, multicultural restaurants and biotech labs. Though primarily a residential area, The Port, about 2.5 miles from Boston, is home to medical labs as well as a portion of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s campus. Harvard and MIT are the area’s top two employers, and when it comes to keeping the neighborhood pumping, these institutions are vital. "Neighborhoods in that area, like The Port, have a mix of people living there," says Ed Feijo, a lifelong Boston-area resident and Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty that specializes in Cambridge properties. "You have families that have been there for generations, as well as people who have moved there to be close to their jobs in the life sciences and academic fields." Feijo's business partner and fellow Realtor at Coldwell Banker Realty, Gail Roberts, adds that despite some turnover and recent new development, the area "still has a real neighborhood feel with a lot of trees and parks. It's a place where you really know your neighbors."

Boston triple-decker and multi-family homes
Homes in this densely populated area include attached colonial-style single-family residences constructed in the late 1800s, along with traditional Boston triple-deckers and brick multifamily buildings. Homes sizes range from 600 to 3,500 square feet with one to five bedrooms, and list prices fall between $780,000 and $2.5 million. "That area of Cambridge has some good entry-level properties," Feijo says. "Our price point is pretty high here in Cambridge, but that's an area with good value."

Walkable location near transit
Many homes in The Port are located within walking distance of area shops and restaurants, but for things farther out, several bus stops and the Central subway station are nearby along Massachusetts Avenue. For those who prefer to drive to other parts of the Boston area, nearby thoroughfares, like Broadway and Cambridge Street, provide access to destinations across the Charles River, including downtown Boston. "The Port is very accessible to everything," Feijo says. "Whether on a bike or the T or a bus, you can easily get to all points of Cambridge or over the bridge into Boston from there."

Highly rated nearby schools
Children living in The Port attend Cambridge Public Schools, a district rated an A-plus by Niche. Nearby schools include the Cambridgeport School for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, which Niche rates an A-minus and B-plus-rated Cambridge Street Upper School for grades six through eight. For high school students, there's the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, which earns an A-plus from Niche and is the alma mater of numerous well-known names, including the poet E.E. Cummings and actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

For a weekend grocery run, there's Formaggio Kitchen, a gourmet European and American outpost with prepared foods and grocery items, specialty cheeses and charcuterie, and Whole Foods sits just outside the neighborhood.
