Carlstadt
Suburban Neighborhood in New Jersey
Bergen County 07072
Meadowlands, American Dream Mall
Meadowlands Sports Complex hosts MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets, as well as its famous horse track and state fairgrounds. Besides having access to high-end shopping, the American Dream Mall is also an indoor playground for all ages. There's Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park and DreamWorks Water Park, Sea Life Aquarium, Legoland Discovery Center, museums and an indoor ski park. Back in the neighborhood, Carlstadt is home to several pocket parks where kids can exert energy on sports fields and playgrounds. The Carlstadt Recreation Center Complex opened in 2023 and offers multi-use turf fields with night lighting, a small walking path and a playground. Soccer enthusiasts of all ages can play year-round at Sofive, an indoor soccer facility with eight fields. On the borough's edge is the Hackensack Meadowlands Conservation and Wildlife Area. While the area’s focus is to protect and preserve the watershed, residents can still kayak through the marshy area.Chain stores and local restaurants like Biggie’s
Shops and restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood, including grocery chains like Stop & Shop and local markets like Grand Bazaar with Indian and Asian grocery staples. Steve's Sizzling Steaks, a local staple since 1936, sits off Route 17 and features rustic, American roadhouse decor. Another local favorite is Biggie's with seafood and Italian-inspired pub dishes. Just to the south is the American Dream Mall, a large retail and entertainment complex with over 450 stores.Condos and colonial-style homes
Carlstadt residents live close together with views of the Hackensack River and the Manhattan skyline. Despite the condensed nature of the borough, there’s an even mix of older and newer single-family homes and multi-family residences. Renovated homes and Cape Cod-style residences make up most of the single-family homes available, many having small driveways and garages. Properties do not go on the market often, with just 30 total condos, townhouses and homes sold in the past year. Condos and townhouses with three-to-four bedrooms usually sell for $500,000 to $700,000, while homes tend to sell for $600,000 to $800,000.Internship programs for high school seniors
Kids may start at Carlstadt Public School, which earns a B-plus from Niche, for kindergarten through eighth grade, before attending Henry P. Becton Regional High, which also gets a B-plus and offers a career exploration internship program to seniors.Commuting to New York City
Approximately 8 miles northwest of New York City, Carlstadt residents can reliably commute into the city for work and play. There's a direct bus line into Midtown Manhattan, and Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 17 cut through the borough. “Route 17 to Route 3 will take you right into the city,” says Robie. You’ve also got the Rutherford and Wood-Ridge train stations within a five-minute drive of each other.”
