Peaceful living near urban attractions in Cary
While it may not be directly in the middle, Cary Town Center offers convenience and amenities near the heart of Cary. The neighborhood gets its name from a former shopping mall, which has been demolished. “Cary is a family-friendly town with incredible greenways and frequent events,” says Ellen Pitts, Realtor and owner of Harmony Realty Triangle, who makes guides on life in the North Carolina Triangle. Situated 2 miles from downtown Cary, the neighborhood offers access to frequent community events, highly rated schools, and popular restaurants while maintaining a peaceful, suburban feel.
Ranches and colonial revivals on curving forested streets
Houses primarily sit on curving, shaded streets with cul-de-sacs, and forests offer residents privacy from the busier roads that border the neighborhood. Most homes feature grass lawns framed by trees and neat landscaping. Split-levels and ranches from the 1970s are common and typically cost between $400,000 and $500,000. Three-bedroom Colonial Revivals built in the 1980s cost about $580,000. Along with single-family homes, there are also subdivisions. Luxury Craftsman-style townhomes built in 2018 can cost $670,000.

Artistic playgrounds and paved walkways at Cary Downtown Park
After 20 years of development, Cary Downtown Park opened in late 2023. “The whole park has been redeveloped into an artistic, community-focused area. It has a “bark bar,” water features, walkways and natural playgrounds for kids. Plus, it’s in the same complex as the library,” Pitts says. The park is 2 miles northwest of Cary Town Center. Walnut Street Park is located near the neighborhood’s southern edge and offers a walking trail, playground and basketball and pickleball courts. The neighborhood also hosts opportunities for indoor recreation ¬— the Triangle Aquatic Center has a public pool that hosts swim classes and group fitness programs. Residents can gather family and friends for bowling at Bowlero.
Cary schools earn A-minus ratings
Kids may begin at Adams Year-Round Elementary and advance to East Cary Magnet Middle. Students can continue learning at Cary High, the first public school in the state. All three schools earn A-minus ratings from Niche. The high school features the Academy of Technology and Advanced Manufacturing, which is a learning community designed to help students develop skills in design, advanced manufacturing and engineering. The program includes work-based learning and field-specific classes.
Retro classics at the Shiny Diner
To shop for groceries, residents can head to Harris Teeter. Crossroads Plaza, which is 2 miles south of the neighborhood, houses many more retailers, including Target and HomeGoods. Residents can find local businesses and boutiques in downtown Cary. Locals can find a range of dining options along Walnut Street and Buck Jones Road. The Shiny Diner serves classic American dishes, like burgers and fried chicken, in a silver, retro setting. Noodle Boulevard serves ramen and rice bowls with a variety of toppings.

Support local artists at the annual Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festival
The neighborhood benefits from its central Cary location. “There’s always something wholesome to do in Cary. The town is always putting on very family-friendly events,” Pitts says. Cary has two annual art festivals. The Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festival takes place in the spring, and the Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival happens in August. Both festivals showcase local artists and feature live music, craft tables and food. There are numerous seasonal events as well, like The Great Pumpkin Carve, a fall event with pumpkin-decorating stations. During December, Cary honors all major holidays with a Christmas parade, menorah lighting and Kwanzaa celebration.
GoCary takes residents downtown
GoCary offers public transportation throughout Cary; residents can find bus stops concentrated along the southern portion of the neighborhood. Fares have been suspended through June 2024. Most residents rely on personal vehicles to commute to work and run errands. Interstate 40 runs along Cary Town Center’s eastern edge and connects to Interstate 440, so residents can easily access Cary and Raleigh.
Epic Games headquarters is in progress
The headquarters for video game developer Epic Games is scheduled to be built at the former site of Cary Towne Center. Construction was originally slated to conclude in 2024 but rezoning stalled in 2022, and the timeline has been pushed back.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
