Why Live in Glen Lennox

Glen Lennox, a neighborhood more than 50 years old at the intersection of Route 54 and Highway 501, has a history of preservation and reinvention. About 2 miles from the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, the heavily wooded community has historically been a desirable place where families, retirees and UNC students lived. “It used to be student housing, and it’s now undergoing a huge redevelopment,” says Jay Kennihan, a longtime Chapel Hill resident and owner of Chapel Hill Realty Group. The Save Glen Lennox campaign preserved the spirit of the original neighborhood as new additions were built. Today, Glen Lennox has more of a mixed-use purpose with the presence of the four-story office building called the Gwendolyn, which takes its name from Gwendolyn Harrison, the first African-American woman to attend UNC-Chapel Hill. It’s one of the few new office buildings in the city. The Gwendolyn, the Glen Lennox Shopping Center and apartment complexes are clustered along Highway 501. The rest of the neighborhood is primarily single-story homes on long, straight streets. Oak and magnolia trees shade the residential streets and sidewalks.
