Named after the cherry trees that once covered the hillsides and still persist in the yards of locals, Cherry is a historic community striving to keep its roots alive. Historic homes endure amid slowly developing properties
Some of the area’s earliest buildings can be found along Luther, Cherry and Baxter streets. One-story bungalows with simple gabled roofs and two-story traditional homes with broad front porches remain. Woven throughout the neighborhood are many newer brick condos that typically list between $300,000 and $525,000. Most of the condos are from the late 1990s, creating an architectural landscape that blends the past and present. “For a long time, no one could go in and tear down old structures or create new development,” says Kevin Thompson, Realtor at Helen Adams Realty and longtime local. “It’s a protected neighborhood, and for good reason. The city has a tendency to tear everything down instead of preserving history.” The Cherry Community Organization and the Historic Cherry Neighborhood Association work to preserve the area’s history and source federal funding for residential housing improvements. Walking tours offer information about the remaining historical buildings, such as the cherished Morgan School built in 1925.

Students in Cherry can attend Elizabeth Traditional Elementary School, one of Charlotte's first elementary schools. The school has a B-minus on Niche and became a high-achieving Leader in Me school in the 2020-2021 school year. Middle schoolers can attend Piedmont Middle School, which has an A-minus on Niche and is rated the ninth-best public middle school in Mecklenburg County. High schoolers can get a taste of the college campus experience at Myers Park High School, which has a 62-acre campus and 13 instructional buildings. Niche gives the school an A rating and the title of the sixth-best public high school in Mecklenburg County.
Elizabeth Traditional Elementary School provides programs from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Honoring past and present at Cherry's green spaces
Honoring the present is as important as honoring the past for Cherry residents. The Kings Drive Art Walk, a festival featuring arts, crafts and music, allows Cherry’s newest artists to shine. The festival takes place along Little Sugar Creek Greenway, a linear park and stream restoration project that extends over a mile along the neighborhood’s western border. Just two blocks away, Cherry Park is the area’s recreational hub, with 2 acres featuring a baseball diamond, a playground and a basketball court. Midtown Park is another green space for locals right outside Cherry; it is a small, scenic park featuring a grassy lawn, public art installations, walkways and benches. Next door is Pearl Street Park, another monument to the history of Charlotte’s African American community.

Diverse dining and farmers markets right by Midtown
Cherry’s food scene is actually quite diverse despite its small size. Mama Ricotta’s is a nationally recognized locale serving home-style Italian cuisine for over 30 years. On the new side, Devil’s Logic Brewing is a hip craft brewery with a cozy outdoor patio space. Locals can grab a traditional American brunch at Original Pancake House or dine with the French at The Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant that also offers elevated four-course meal experiences. When residents need to restock their pantries or grab everyday essentials, Metropolitan shopping mall in Cherry’s northwest corner has a few brand-name offerings, like Trader Joe’s, Best Buy, and Target. “Retail-wise, Cherry doesn’t have a ton in the neighborhood,” says Thompson. “But Midtown is walkable from the area, and locals can access a lot of shops there.” Cherry locals also love to get fresh flowers, meat, vegetables, dairy and prepared goods at Kings Drive Farmers Market, open every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. All of the market’s produce is local from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
