What makes Dilworth one of Charlotte's most desirable neighborhoods

Established in 1891, Dilworth was Charlotte's original suburb, just 2 miles south of Uptown. Today, it still has that suburban feel, with historic homes and luxury builds sitting along wide, tree-shaded streets, but the lifestyle is much more urban. Here, residents are steps from buzzing restaurants, coffee shops and bars, as well as the Atherton Mill mall. Commutes to the Center City can take less than 10 minutes, and kids can walk to their elementary school. A large neighborhood park offers an escape in nature, and a long-running neighborhood association keeps residents connected through annual events and a community garden.

From historic bungalows to custom, multimillion-dollar mansions

The oldest homes here are mainly Craftsman bungalows from the early 1900s, but architectural styles range widely, from regal Georgian and Colonial Revival designs to fairytale Tudor Revivals and sleek modern builds. There are also many custom mansions, as well as townhouses and condos. Front porches are common, and lots are neatly landscaped with enough room for detached garages or in-ground pools. “It’s extremely charming,” says Jen Chance, a Realtor with 5 Points Realty. “There are mature trees. There are classic bungalow styles. There are contemporary styles. It’s close to all the hot things you want to be around in Charlotte. It’s a very established neighborhood.” Shannon Winkler Lynch, a Realtor with Savvy + Co. Real Estate, agrees: "Dilworth is one of the crowned jewels of Charlotte. The houses are just envy-worthy, whether you're living in one of the smaller original homes or the newer mansions.” A portion of Dilworth became Charlotte’s first historic district in 1983. The Historic District Commission must approve new development and exterior renovations within its boundaries.
