Solid homes in a solid location
As Eastway’s name indicates, location is key to this Queen City suburb. But where this unassuming neighborhood excels most might be in its quality homes, which have hung around proud and orderly through all the years. “Eastway has some of the best built homes that I’ve ever sold,” says Michelle Pentecost, Realtor with Pollinator Properties who has been selling homes in Charlotte and the Piedmont for 17 years. “A lot of Eastway’s subdivisions were established in the 1960s and ‘70s, and the developers built some of the best homes of Charlotte. They’re structurally sound, and most of them are brick. They’re solid homes.” Further, home prices on average are low in comparison to Charlotte’s median, which is all the more surprising given the community’s location near cultural hubs. Pentecost: “Residents get access to all the thriving scenes of Charlotte, like NoDa and Plaza Midwood, for an entry level home price.”

A mix of homes with lower price points
Many of Eastway’s subdivisions are separated by meandering creeks and mature forests. Residential streets branch off The Plaza, a major thoroughfare bounding the neighborhood to the south. Lawns are well-kept and often shaded by mature trees. On the streets of Eastway, visitors will find a mix of custom-built ranch-style homes, raised ranch-styles, split-levels with gambrel roofs and New Traditional builds that draw inspiration from Colonial Revival and Cape Cod homes. Prices start just above $200,000 and taper off after $400,000. This is below Charlotte’s median home value of roughly $450,000. Single-story duplexes and individual condo units can be found on the southwest corner of the neighborhood, with prices in the $100,000s.

Having fun in Eastway, indoors and out
Just down Grier Road, Reedy Creek Nature Preserve spans some 700 wooded acres. The park offers several hiking trails, as well as picnic pavilions, volleyball and basketball courts, a fishing pier and a nature center, which Pentecost highlights as “state-of-the-art.” She says, “The nature center has some of the best environmental education programming in the country. I taught workshops on gardening there for a while, and there are other great programs there, too.” Other programs include watercolor lessons and nature walks. Residents can keep in shape by visiting Eastway Regional Recreation Center’s weight room, gym, indoor track and other facilities. The center also frequently hosts fitness classes, such as yoga and Zumba. On the western edge of the neighborhood, locals will find Blackbox Theater, an entertainment venue known for hosting a variety of EDM performers. The Independent Picture House (IPH) is just next door. One of the only independent cinemas in Charlotte, the IPH opened its doors in 2022 thanks in large part to crowdfunding. The theater screens foreign films, cult classics and more. Students can become members for free, enjoying benefits such as discounted tickets.

Pentecost characterizes Lang Van as “one of the best and oldest Vietnamese restaurants in Charlotte.” Their service alone is renowned, and their menu offers traditional favorites from pho to summer rolls, as well as their own innovations on classic Vietnamese dishes. Further up Eastway Drive, foodies will find international restaurants such as Enat Ethiopian and Lempira Restaurant, which serves Central American cuisine. Residents living on the east side of the neighborhood can stop by Food Lion, while others might take North Tryon Street to Belgate Shopping Center, bustling with stores such as Walmart Supercenter, Ikea and Hobby Lobby. For specialty East Asian products, including live lobsters and Chinese herbal medicine, locals can visit Asian Market. Boutiques, restaurants, breweries, coffee shops and more can be found just across East Sugar Creek Road in North Davidson, or NoDa. “That’s where a lot of Charlotte’s local music scene is.
