Suburban Charlotte Suburb between Pineville and Ballantyne
Named for the network of creeks cradling its south end, McAlpine is a South Charlotte neighborhood 15 miles removed from the vibrant Center City. The neighborhood is a residential peninsula formed by three sides of creeks and accompanying greenways. "The area attracts both working professionals and families because you have proximity to jobs at the Pineville hospital and interstate access to Uptown, but also really great schools," says Carmela Hidalgo, a Realtor/Broker with NorthGroup Real Estate who has several years of experience selling on Charlotte's south side. Centered between the growing attractions in Ballantyne and Pineville, this suburb enjoys a natural woodland buffer from surrounding commercial hubs.

Ranch-style homes and Colonial Revival styles encompassed by trees
Homes from the late 1970s and early 80s rest along McAlpine’s winding and hilly streets, often ending in cul-de-sacs. “The homes are older than you would find over in Ballantyne, but with that comes larger lots and mature trees," Hidalgo says. Lots, shaded by towering pines and decorated with shaped shrubs, range from 1/4 to ½ acre. Ranch-style homes are the most common, featuring red brick or vinyl siding. Various other home styles are available, from Dutch Colonial-inspired split-levels and Cape Cods to angular 1970s contemporary designs and symmetrical suburban two-stories. Most homes cost between $350,000 and $500,000. Condos and townhomes sit close to State Route 51, with units from $150,000 to $330,000.

Flood zones and nearby McAlpine Wastewater Treatment Plant
Most homes are unaffected by potential flooding around the McMullen and McAlpine creeks, but some properties that sit directly adjacent are part of the FEMA flood zone AE. The AE designation means there is a 1% annual chance of flooding, and specific insurance is needed. Additionally, the southernmost tip of the neighborhood sits less than a mile from the McAlpine Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Fresh facilities at the brand-new Ballantyne Ridge High
Endhaven Elementary earns a B-plus rating from Niche. The STEM-focused school features a science lab, an outdoor classroom and a large garden. Quail Hollow Middle, an International Baccalaureate magnet school, receives a C-plus. The new Ballantyne Ridge High opened for the 2024-2025 school year. Built to relieve overcrowding at several area schools, Ballantyne Ridge features a four-story classroom wing with 100 classrooms and is not yet rated by Niche. Currently, the school only serves ninth through 11th-grade students, as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools doesn’t relocate senior classes. Neighborhood 12th graders learn at the nearby A-minus-rated South Mecklenburg High, where they attended class before Ballantyne Ridge was built.

More than a dozen parks nearby in Ballantyne
McMullen Creek Greenway and McAlpine Creek Greenway flow along the neighborhood's west and east sides. These trails, popular for walks and bike rides, switch from gravel to pavement and elevated wood as they parallel their namesake creeks through dense forest. The private Painted Tree Swim & Racquet Association is in the neighborhood, offering members access to an outdoor pool, a tennis court and a half-court for basketball. Twenty public parks are nearby in the upscale neighborhood of Ballantyne, including the expansive Ballantyne’s Backyard, a popular picnic spot with walking trails and several catch-and-release fishing ponds. Mecklenburg County’s William R. Davie Park is less than 4 miles east, featuring a large playground, soccer fields and a spacious off-leash dog park. South Charlotte is a golfer’s paradise. Eight private clubs are within a 5-mile radius of McAlpine, such as TPC Piper Glen, which offers 18 holes designed by golf great Arnold Palmer. Water-based adventure is a short drive away. “It’s so easy to jump on I-485 and head to the National Whitewater Center,” says Tina Hicks, a Realtor with Helen Adams Realty, who lives nearby in Quail Hollow. “You can go whitewater rafting. You can do a ropes course. In the wintertime, they’ll have an ice-skating rink.”

It's really nice and far enough away from the street for there to not be traffic when trying to get out.

There are always police around; however, they rarely take action for speeding, reckless driving, etc. Probably why Charlotte has terrible drivers. As for crime, it is handled well.

I love this area of town. The people are very friendly and outgoing. There are many choices for food and activities to do. I see bigger and greater things coming to this area in the future.
