Windsor Park’s beginning to burst with activity
Windsor Park may not have the name recognition of nearby Plaza Midwood, but that’s not to say that there’s a lack of things to do in this midcentury, residential community. In recent years, the neighborhood association has been very proactive in organizing events such as an annual block party, and the Carolina Farm Trust has overseen the creation of an urban farm within the neighborhood’s boundaries worked in part by local retirees. Michelle Pentecost, Realtor with Pollinator Properties who has sold homes across Charlotte for 17 years, characterizes the community as a “great sit-on-your-porch kind of neighborhood,” but that’s not all Windsor Park has going for it. “Location is the biggest asset for this neighborhood,” Pentecost says. “There’s not many places in Charlotte where you have access to so many great restaurants but also Uptown, Plaza Midwood and NoDa.”

Low price points and high-quality homes
Windsor Park’s broad brick ranch-style homes and split-levels stretch over tidy, grassy lawns. Many of these ‘50s and ‘60s-era homes have received extensive renovations from new buyers. Colonial Revival builds from the 21st century are also scattered throughout the neighborhood. Most subdivisions have multiple entrance and exit points, and busier streets come with sidewalks. Driveways are long enough to accommodate multiple cars, though some residents opt to park on the road. Home prices usually fall between $300,000 and $525,000. Condo units fetch between $100,000 and $150,000. Although Windsor Park is only 2 miles east of Plaza Midwood, the median home price in this neighborhood is just under $400,000, much lower than Plaza Midwood’s median home price of about $800,000.

Garinger High is located just outside of the Uptown area of Charlotte in Windsor Park.
A historic high school with modern updates on the horizon
Windsor Park Elementary is centrally located, within walking distance of many homes. The school receives overall rating of C-plus from Niche. Students can move up to Eastway Middle and Garinger High, both C-rated. In 2007, Garinger High was designated as a historic landmark; however, this school isn’t stuck in the past. Plans are underway to renovate the school and add a second gym, a new cafeteria and specialty classrooms.
Close to Uptown, thoroughfares and bus routes
Windsor Park is positioned between major thoroughfares such as Eastway Drive, East W. T. Harris Boulevard and East Independent Highway. Uptown is within a 6-mile drive of most homes, but traffic can be heavy. A few Charlotte Area Transit System bus lines pass along the edge of the neighborhood, such as 9, which runs to Uptown, and 29, which runs to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. SouthPark shopping mall is 8 miles southwest.
Central Avenue runs straight from Windsor Park directly to Uptown Charlotte.
The bus is the easiest way to get to the Uptown area from Windsor park.

Parks and a museum
The Charlotte Museum of History is one of the neighborhood’s most recognizable landmarks, taking visitors on a deep dive through the history of The Queen City. Also present on the grounds is the Rock House, the residence of Revolutionary statesman Hezekiah Alexander and the oldest surviving home in Mecklenburg County. For outdoor exercise, residents can walk the trails and play the disc golf course at Kilborne Park. A DIY skatepark was recently added to Kilborne. Evergreen Nature Preserve is further to the south, a 77-acre green space with even more hiking trails.

Eating like a New Yorker in Windsor Park
Pentecost highlights the diversity of cuisines that can be found just outside of Windsor Park. One of her favorites is Letty’s. “They have a little touch of Cajun, but for the most part, they’re known for Southern comfort food.” She enjoys the pecan chicken and shrimp and grits most of all. Concerning pizzerias locals might visit, for Pentecost, there’s a clear winner. “Portofino’s has got the best New York-style pizza that I’ve had in North Carolina,” Pentecost says. “I’m from New York originally, and I still have a tough time finding pizza with that traditional thin crust, but Portofino’s on Eastway Drive has the best by far.” Landmark Diner, a family-run restaurant, serves up Greek and American classics like gyros and spinach pie. The establishment was featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives TV series. Supermarkets including Food Lion and Compare Foods can be found on all four corners of the neighborhood, while most nearby retailers such as Ross Dress for Less are located at Eastway Shopping Center. For produce that’s as locally grown as can be, residents can stop by the Urban Farm at Aldersgate. Much of the gardening is done by the residents of Aldersgate retirement community, but everyone’s welcome to reap the fruits and veggies whether by attending quarterly farm-to-table dinners or buying food from the farmstand.

Special celebrations in Windsor Park
The African American Heritage Festival takes place at the Charlotte Museum of History. Events include discussion panels, lectures by authors and live musical performances. The Windsor Park Neighborhood Association organizes festivities such as an annual block party, featuring a cornhole tournament and karaoke. Other events include a community-wide yard sale and Boo Bash, where children can decorate pumpkins and trunk-or-treat.
