Avondale's housing inventory includes established properties that have been here for several decades. "In that area, they're mostly older homes," says Melissa McKinsey, an affiliate broker with Keller Williams Downtown Chattanooga, who has 26 years of experience. "They're Craftsman, bungalows, those kinds of older homes." Most are from the early to mid-20th century, and many houses have been renovated with updated flooring, windows, paint and appliances. New construction is rare, but you can find some modern homes built on infills. Fixer-uppers and investment properties in the area typically cost less than $100,000. Move-in-ready houses often range from the lower $100,000s to the upper $200,000s.

Revitalization projects and new businesses shaping the neighborhood
In addition to the renovated and new construction homes, Avondale is seeing other revitalization projects throughout the neighborhood. A new community center opened in 2021 and is four times the size of the previous building. Nippon Paint recently opened a plant on Southern Street, providing around 150 jobs in the area. Other small businesses have opened nearby, including vegan restaurant The Bohemian Village near the intersection of Glass Street and Chamberlain Avenue. "I think that Glass Street area is probably one to keep an eye on," McKinsey says. "I think that area might be leading the way in the neighborhood."
