A place that remembers its history
Over 100 years ago, the Grand Boulevard community, which includes the Bronzeville neighborhood, was the focal center for nightlife south of downtown Chicago. It was a place where African-American culture flourished, and after the sun went down, it was the place to be seen as famous musicians performed. Today, many houses are from that period, and one of the buildings remains, along with some murals depicting what used to be an active 43rd Street corridor. The neighborhood sits just 5 miles south of downtown and provides access to Lake Shore Drive to the east and Interstate 90/94 or the Dan Ryan Expressway to the west.

Historic entertainment venues
At the corner of 43rd Street and Calumet Avenue is the original 1897 design of The Forum Bronzeville, close to the Green Line station. “Chicago natives Lou Rawls and Chaka Khan used to perform here,” says Paulette Hollingsworth, a real estate broker with Baird & Warner with over 15 years of experience. “Some modern buildings have gone up around it as part of the redevelopment. It would be great if more nightlife developed in that area because that’s the history.” On 35th Street, a beauty supply store business used to be the Sunset Café, a place that played jazz where Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole would perform regularly.

Chicago’s famous Greystone architecture
One of the most popular classic architectural designs of houses in the Chicago area is called Greystones, often found in thin multi-story structures and are either single-family homes or condos. Most of them in Grand Boulevard were built in the 1890s, and some have been renovated. There are even some influences of Queen Anne in some of the Greystone architecture. Unlike some neighborhoods, there are no rules for new construction, and they don’t have to adhere to classic styles. That means there are some modern designs on new construction. “Finding a single-family home in the $600,000 range in good condition is tough. Most of the range is between $700,000 and over $1 million,” Hollingsworth says. Condos usually run between $350,000 and $500,000 and have three to four bedrooms.
Although Grand Boulevard's overall CAP crime score is 5, slightly above the national average of 4, there is a high violent crime rating. In the neighborhood, services are available for adults and kids, including the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Service Center on Cottage Grove Avenue. Services there include referrals to local food pantries, workforce development services and after-school programs for kids.

Historic church
Constructed in 1899, the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church is part of the story of the origins of gospel music, especially blended with blues. During the 1930s, Thomas Dorsey, a gospel music composer and musician, formed the first gospel choir specializing in the occasional upbeat spiritual brand of music. Historic appearances at the church include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. Services are still held every Sunday morning and even broadcast on YouTube.

Lake and a beach
During the summer in Chicago, people here don’t have to go far to enjoy the water of Lake Michigan and the beach. Oakwood Beach is open for the season from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Swimming is only permitted when lifeguards are on duty, and grilling is only allowed in designated areas. Surrounding the beach is the over 650-acre Burnham Park, with trails, a playground and basketball courts. Access to the park and beach is easy with a pedestrian bridge over Lake Shore Drive from 41st Street.

Neighborhood school
Public school students can be part of the City of Chicago School District 299, where Mollison Elementary School teaches prekindergarten through eighth grade. The school gets a C on Niche and has a 14-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Sixth graders at the school can begin to take International Baccalaureate classes. Philips Academy High School is rated a C-minus on Niche and has an average 92% graduation rate. Hales Franciscan High School is a Catholic-based private option.
Mollison Elementary serves residents of Grand Boulevard.

Green Line train
The Green Line elevated train station is on 43rd Street between Calumet and Prairie Avenues. Chicago Transit Authority buses run on many major streets in the neighborhood. Medical care is nearby, with Provident Hospital of Cook County located on 51st Street in the neighborhood’s southern end.

I mean overall Bronzeville is a decent neighborhood. It has it's issues with crime and shootings but for the most part it's under control; perhaps it because whites and being close to downtown.
