Blue-collar community once home to Walt Disney
The mastermind behind “The Most Magical Place on Earth” once called Hermosa home. Walt Disney’s childhood home, a two-story cottage, attracts tourists to the neighborhood rooted in Chicago’s manufacturing history. Today, the community capitalizes on quiet residential streets and accessible transportation routes to downtown Chicago, less than 9 miles away.

Workers' cottages reflect community's manufacturing history
Most houses in Hermosa were built before 1940. Predominant architectural styles include workers' cottages, bungalows and brick two-flats flanking sidewalk-lined streets. Yards are small and uniform, with front stoops flanked by gardens and shrubbery. Due to their historical nature, houses are ripe for renovation, with many owners opting to enhance their homes with new roofing, flooring and windows. “It’s one of the best areas for investors,” says Mira Kovacevic, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “People appreciate the value of the homes and can make good money there if the properties are revitalized.” Most homes range from $200,000 to $450,000, while new builds and fully renovated properties sell for $500,000 to nearly $750,000. Multi-family units with six to eight bedrooms typically sell for $500,000 to $1 million depending on the size and age of the building.

A taste of Venezuela at Rica Arepa
West Fullerton and West Armitage avenues are lifelines for the neighborhood’s retail and restaurant scene. Hermosa has a notable selection of Latin cuisine and specialty eateries. Rica Arepa is a husband-and-wife-owned Venezuelan restaurant that serves authentic dishes like pabellon criollo, which comes with shredded beef, rice, plantains and black beans. The aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries greets customers at Guadalajara Bakery, a grab-and-go spot and local favorite for breakfast sandwiches. Right Bee Cider occupies the former Schwinn bicycle factory and boasts an on-site taproom where locals can sip on house-made ciders or grab a 12-pack to go. For convenient shopping, retailers like Burlington and Walmart are tucked in the neighborhood’s southern end.

Multiple neighborhood parks and walks on The 606
Multiple parks scattered throughout Hermosa give locals a place to get fresh air. Kelvyn Park is the largest in the neighborhood, spanning nearly 10 acres. Parents can take their kids to the playground or splash pad to burn off some energy. A large fieldhouse has a fitness center, a gym and an auditorium. Walking paths wind through the green space, passing by basketball, volleyball and tennis courts. Hermosa Park features a playground and two walking pathways, each about a quarter mile long. Friends also meet at the park to play on the basketball and tennis courts. The 606, an elevated trail that was once a rail line, sits just outside the neighborhood’s eastern end. “It’s a really big deal in the area. People are losing their minds over the trail,” says Lori Wyatt, a broker with Real Estate Growth Partners. “The landscapers made sure they used a lot of plants native to the area along the trail. It’s very serene and feels like a garden or a wildlife preserve in the middle of the city.” The walking and running pathway stretches nearly 3 miles, ending near the lively Wicker Park neighborhood, packed with restaurants, entertainment and a bustling nightlife scene.

Residents can also take advantage of neighborhood socials, including tours of local breweries or get-togethers at nearby restaurants.

From there, students can head to the C-minus-rated Kelvyn Park Junior and Senior High School, which serves roughly 500 students in Grades 7-12. There are so many pothole in this area that have been around for years. In the winter, snow is not removed fast enough.

The housing in the area is okay. Many live in poor conditions and others don't care about their neighbors.
