Kenwood, a part of Chicago's historic southside
Originally meant to be a reprieve from the congestion of greater Chicago, Kenwood has scenic and historical roots, with mansions that still stand today. The southern portion of the community is part of the Hyde Park-Kenwood Historic District, and is considered a Chicago Landmark district. Today, Kenwood retains its vintage feel in the Kenwood Historic District with magnificent architecture. “It's just a real neighborhood feel; it's a special place. It's a bubble of life on the southside. The people that come here are looking for community," says Susan O'Connor Davis, a local Kenwood realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Koenig Rubloff since 2014 and author of "Chicago's Historic Hyde Park." Former residents include the Obamas and Muhammad Ali, so it's got a bit of a known reputation in the Chicago area, and for good reason. The streets are covered in green space, borders the shores of Lake Michigan and has several unique restaurants and shops within walking distance.

The vintage architecture of Kenwood
Historic houses built by renowned architects can be found with a simple stroll around the neighborhood, including distinct Prairie constructions and Colonial Revival manors. Many residents live in homes that follow these styles, as they were the forerunners for the architectural brilliance of Kenwood. "The history of the houses there is truly stunning,” says Davis. “There's fabulous old homes and modern tossed in, the structures lend to flexibility.” The neighborhood is filled with vintage greystones and Queen Anne-inspired mansions next door with Chicago brownstones and condos. Antiquated properties that have been rehabbed or meticulously maintained will be pricier, often starting around $400,000 and reach $1 million, with some crossing the $2 million mark. However, condo space varies in Kenwood, so lower prices are available depending on lake proximity and the general size of the building. Plenty of stunning Chicago brick flats run the lower end of the median pricing. Lot sizes in Kenwood are also some of the largest within Chicago, so many residents enjoy expansive yards and green space surrounding their homes.

Kenwood Community Park is ideal for residents to run around on the sports fields or volley back and forth on the tennis courts. Kenwood Park hosts day camps and seasonal sports leagues, as well as season-themed events such as pumpkin picking and Movies in the Park. Students can begin at William H. Ray Elementary, with a B-minus on Niche, for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
