Everything in Lakeview is within walking distance
If you’re looking for a walkable community full of local restaurants, great schools, transportation options and entertainment, then you should check out Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. Located just south of Wrigley Field, the neighborhood gets a lot of activity and excitement during the baseball season, while giving locals enough space from the venue that things don’t get too hectic. Local restaurants line Southport Avenue, within walking distance of homes. Commuters can head downtown, but buses also lead to Lake Michigan, only a few miles away.
Lakeview is a vibrant neighborhood teeming with energy and community spirit.
Lakeview is just a mile from the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan.

Lakeview is mostly condos with some single-family homes
“It’s filled with a mix of condos. You’re not going to see any high rises here, but instead more walkup buildings and single-family homes,” says broker Juliana Yeager with Christie’s International Real Estate and 25-year resident of Lakeview. “All the single-family homes are super luxury.” Condos are typically brick and stone low-rise buildings. Two- and three-flats are still available, but these and single-family homes often come with rooftop decks because porches are less common in Lakeview. The single-family homes often have the same brick and stone façades to match condo complexes, though there are also some cottages mixed in.
Lakeview features century-old brown and greystones.
Townhouses with Queen Anne elements can be found in Lakeview.
Contemporary builds are featured throughout Lakeview.

Pricier homes in Lakeview than surrounding neighborhoods
Between the various sections of the general Lakeview area, Lakeview proper is one of the most expensive. Its median housing price is about $740,000, more than double the cost of Lakeview East. It’s also higher than Wrigleyville and comparable to Southport Corridor. Older and historic condos are the most affordable, ranging from the upper $300,000s to mid $600,000s. Contemporary condos built in the last 25 years cost between the lower $700,000s and $1.5 million. Single-family homes, often historic and renovated, range between $1 and $2.8 million, but are bigger than homes in surrounding neighborhoods. “You get more bang for your buck,” Yeager says.
Diverse and unique restaurants bring the community to life
Local restaurants are at the forefront of Lakeview culture. Yeager says chains simply don’t survive here. People like the unique, diverse vibe brought through fun local restaurants, including:
Little Goat Diner: This all-day breakfast spot combines an old-fashioned diner feel with modern fixtures for a cozy and vintage atmosphere.
Osmium Coffee Bar: When in need of some caffeine, stop in here for a coffee, and to enjoy the quirky and surrealist art on the walls.
Crosby's Kitchen: This rustic restaurant specializes in Midwestern comfort food, known for its cornbread skillet and rotisserie chicken.
Tango Sur Grill: The menu here features Argentinian entrees, like empanadas and sausages.
When not dining out, you can also walk to grocery stores, like Jewel-Osco and Whole Foods Market.
In Lakeview, Stephanie Izard's Little Goat Diner is a local favorite.
For a family brunch, residents enjoy Crosby's Kitchen's comfort food and tasty cocktails.
Locals head to Whole Foods to pick up groceries and grab a quick bite.

Walkability, bikeability and public transportation options
While the area is known for its walkability, you don’t have to travel everywhere on foot. “It’s a bike-heavy area in general,” Yeager says. “They recently repaved several streets to add large bike lanes.” Major roads like Lincoln, Southport and Belmont avenues all have bike lanes. Buses also stop along most of the major streets here. Commuters can take the L, with the Red, Brown and Purple lines all heading to The Loop, about 30 minutes away. Lake Shore Drive is just a few minutes away, offering a way for drivers to get downtown.
A bike station is conveniently located by the Southport "L" station.
Residents can take the "L" at Lakeview's Southport station.

Lakeview residents can catch a Cubs game at Wrigley.
Wrigley Field and other Lakeview music venues
Wrigley Field is a major attraction for Cubs fans in Lakeview and across the city, located right next door in Wrigleyville. “We are frequent Wrigley Field members. We have season tickets, and a ton of neighbors have season tickets,” Yeager says. “It’s a 10-minute walk from where we are.” In addition to sports, the area also has a big music scene. Venues include:
Wrigley Field: On the off-season, Wrigley hosts major artists like Lady Gaga, Fall Out Boy and Stray Kids.
Music Box Theatre: This theater originally opened in 1929, and today specializes in silent, international and indie films. A theater organ plays during the intermissions.
The Vic Theatre: Smaller music acts and comedians perform at this 1912 theater. One past artist includes Chappell Roan.
More theaters and comedy clubs are located next door in Lakeview East, still walkable from many parts of Lakeview.
Walking to top-rated Chicago schools
Lakeview is part of Chicago Public Schools. It’s a school choice district, so students can apply to attend other schools outside their assigned zone. Hawthorne Scholastic Academy is a top-rated K-8 public magnet located within walking distance. It partners with organizations like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to bring more music and arts to students.
Lake Michigan and Lincoln Park are nearby
Lakeview doesn’t have many parks of its own, but it’s only a mile from Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan. “People can walk to the lake or ride their bikes,” Yeager says. The park includes playgrounds, gardens and Lincoln Park Zoo. Montrose Beach, North Avenue Beach and Belmont Harbor offer access to the water. Lakefront Trail goes through the park and includes pedestrian and bike lanes.

Great area, some crime (more than other areas, but much less than most areas). Great restaurants and younger scene. Slightly congested, but appearances are kept up nicely by residents who care. Could use more local businesses.

You can find anything within a few blocks. "the Flower Flat" is a cute little restaurant, there are many mom and pop boutiques, doctors offices, eyewear shops, cleaners, florists and "Cheers" type bars where you feel safe and welcome.

I live in Lakeview East along the lakefront with access to the lakefront path for walking, running and biking. It can be a very busy area during nice weather, especially on the weekends. There are ample restaurants, grocery stores and drug stores all within walking distance and it's easy to get elsewhere by uber/lift/taxi or mass transit. Mass transit throughout the city is very good.
