United Center is an up-and-coming area with old homes and new condos
United Center is a Chicago neighborhood brimming with potential. The neighborhood, which takes its name from the arena at its center, welcomes new residents and new opportunities to take advantage of a prime location and relatively affordable housing prices. "Contractors and developers are targeting that area because it's cheaper than other nearby Chicago neighborhoods and has a good return on investment," says Javier Gonzalez, Realtor with Realty of America and lifelong Chicago resident. Diverse housing styles have brought similar diversity in residents, and, according to Gonzalez, "It's an up-and-coming area. A few years ago, it wasn't as welcoming as now, but people are starting to see its potential and make the best of it."

Home to the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks
The United Center opened in 1994, replacing Chicago Stadium as the home of the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Blackhawks. A statue of famed basketball player Michael Jordon greets guests as they enter United Center, which is the size of 16 football fields and the largest arena in the NBA. Since opening, the arena has held over 200 events annually, including sports games, concerts, multi-day festivals and conventions. "People are even turning properties in the neighborhood into short-term rentals because of the United Center events," Gonzalez says. Fans flock to the arena for home games and shows, causing significant foot and car traffic. While the crowds can be a nuisance at times, the arena is seen as a positive catalyst for nearby change. "A market can change so much when there's money poured into it, and there are more things to do," Gonzalez says. "Once the neighborhood around the arena gains some traction, it's going to take off."

Housing options for a range of prices and lifestyles
United Center's available properties have recently changed, with investors converting lofts and warehouses into condos. "I think a lot of people can find something that fits their lifestyle there," Gonzalez says. "There are new developments around the United Center, but also old row houses, multi-families, teardowns and single-family homes." Single-family and row houses with original exterior details sell between $265,000 and $765,000. Condos and lofts in converted warehouses range from $230,000 to $475,000. Condos in new boutique buildings with three to nine units are more expensive, priced from $340,000 to $900,000.

Downtown Chicago, or The Loop as locals call it for its above-ground train tracks that loop around the area, is just three miles east of the neighborhood. United Center has Metra train stations, Chicago Transit Authority bus stops and subway stations. The bike-friendly area has shared and designated lanes along primary roads like Lake Street, Warren Boulevard and Damen Avenue. Interstate 290, a major highway in the region, is along the neighborhood's southern border. Chicago O'Hare International Airport is 15 miles northwest, and hospitals are just south of Interstate 290 in the Illinois Medical District.

Union Park has a long history as a welcoming and active park
The community has small pocket parks with playgrounds, green spaces and short walking trails. Touhy-Hebert Park has a baseball field, basketball courts and a wading pool. Union Park is directly east of the neighborhood, just past Ashland Avenue. The park was a historic community gathering space for events, concerts and activist movements. Since 1853, the park remained fully integrated, while others in the area were closed to Black residents during segregation. Union Park is still a community stronghold, with social events and concerts, a public pool, a playground, tennis courts, basketball courts and baseball fields.

Shopping and dining options are likely to expand
United Center is limited when it comes to shopping and dining. Still, Gonzalez believes "The area has the same potential that Wrigleyville had decades ago. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, the neighborhood around Wrigley Field was the opposite of what it is today," he says. Today, Wrigleyville has an ever-growing assortment of stores, restaurants, hotels and million-dollar homes. United Center residents head to nearby Fulton Market District, Little Italy, West Loop and The Loop for cafes, cocktail bars, clothing boutiques and fine-dining restaurants. Pete's Fresh Market #10 is a family-owned grocery store chain in the neighborhood, and Target is less than a mile east.
The French Market, outside of Near West Side is home to over 30 local vendors.
