Former publishing district next to The Loop

What was once the historic printing and publishing district of the city, Printers Row is now home to unique businesses, college students and those looking to be close to The Loop. With the last remaining printer having closed its doors in 2018, repurposed lofts in historic buildings with plenty of character line the well-maintained streets of Printers Row. “It’s great to see your tax dollars at work,” says Margie Smigel, owner and designated managing broker of The Margie Smigel Group, LLC. “They plow the streets right away, there are beautiful flowers hanging on lampposts.”

Al fresco dining and historic jazz clubs

For an upscale meal, Sofi specializes in Northern Italian cuisine, with specials like grilled sea bass branzino, veal chop Emiliana and authentic Italian pasta prepared daily in-house. Diners can enjoy a special occasion al fresco in Sofi’s bamboo wicker seating during the warmer months. For a more casual meal, residents can head to Kasey’s Tavern or Roots Handmade Pizzeria. There, diners can enjoy hand-made, Chicago-style pizza under the stars with the pizzeria’s contemporary, retractable glass roof.

The Jazz Showcase has been a cornerstone of Printers Row since 1947. The oldest historic jazz club in Chicago, The Jazz Showcase is owned and operated by the original owner’s son, offering live music several nights a week in the historic, Romanesque Dearborn Station, once a train depot.

Printers Row "Lit Fest" honors neighborhood history

The Printers Row Literary Festival, nicknamed “Lit Fest” by locals, is a free outdoor festival held in early September along Dearborn Street. It features Pulitzer Prize-winning speakers, vendors, performers and kid-focused attractions.

Steps from iconic Chicago landmarks

With its proximity to Grant Park, Millenium Park and the Chicago lakefront, Printers Row offers residents endless outdoor entertainment options. Millenium Park hosts events several evenings of the week during the summer months, many centering around music. It’s also home to the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture, affectionately known as “The Bean.” For impeccably maintained lawns, an impressive rose garden amidst views of the city skyline and glimpses of the larger-than-life Buckingham Fountain, residents can make their way to Grant Park. There, they will also find several baseball fields and tennis courts. Residents can enjoy fresh air in Printers Row Park, across from Kasey’s Tavern, with its colorful, geometric fountain.

Printing houses converted to condos

Homes in Printers Row consist of condominiums and revamped lofts, many of which once housed the printing and publishing companies from which the neighborhood gets its name. While the bulk of the buildings were constructed within the first two decades of the 19th century, Printers Row has had “some of the original, New York-style lofts and condo living since the ‘80s,” says Thomas Bezanes, a Compass real estate broker. Most condos sell between $200,000 and $300,000, but buyers can find studios for closer to $100,000. While homeowners tend to stay in the area, the neighborhood is also home to many local college students.

Pedestrian access to six subway lines

While Printers Row is within walking distance of Downtown Chicago, it’s also close to several public transit options. The Harrison subway station on the neighborhood's east side connects Printers Row to the Red Line, while the LaSalle station, further north, allows residents to hop on the Blue Line. The Harold Washington Library State subway station, which connects four different subway lines, is under a 10-minute walk away from the neighborhood.

Chicago is home to the first protected, two-lane bike path running through a central business district in the country. With its own, dedicated traffic signals, the path runs north from Dearborn Station at the very south of Printers Row to the Kinzie Hotel.

Award-winning Jones College Prep School

Younger residents of Printers Row can attend prekindergarten through eighth grade at South Loop Elementary School, which receives a B-plus from Niche. Afterward, they can move on to Philips Academy High School for grades nine through 12, which receives a C-minus. However, students may also enroll in Jones College Preparatory High School, an A-plus-rated public magnet school recognized for its academics. It was named one of the top five schools in the state on US News’ “America’s Best High Schools” list, and it has been designated as a National Blue Ribbon School by the Department of Education.
