There’s a lot of contrast within the architecture here, from condos in sleek modernist buildings to brick townhouses and the historic remains of worker’s cottages that have been renovated internally. “The neighborhood has a very residential feel,” says Santiago Valdez, local Realtor at Relux International. “It has some of the oldest buildings in the city, a low density of units and tree-lined streets that contribute to the relaxed environment.” While single family homes exist in West Town, most housing options here are condos. Homeownership is less common here as renters primarily dominate the area. West Town offers a variety of home styles from single family contemporary homes and American Foursquares to signature Chicago Brownstones and multi-family condominiums. With a median sales price of $640,000, homes here range from the low $200,000s for a one-bedroom condo to upwards of $2 Million for a six-bedroom contemporary single family home. Live music and craft beers at Dancing in the Streets
Events are a big deal in West Town, from Dancing in the Streets in August to West Town Winterfest in December — and they draw people from outside the neighborhood. Dancing in the Streets is held the first week of August, featuring live music, craft beers and food vendors in the Chicago Brewing District. The event's name comes from a popular Grateful Dead song, which is held to celebrate Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia’s birthday on August 9th. West Town Winterfest is held in early December, highlighting small businesses with the help of the Jolly Trolley, which provides guided tours of the neighborhood’s shopping corridors.
High-marks at Chicago Public Schools
Families in West Town are zoned for the Chicago Public School District, which earns a B rating from the educational review site, Niche.
