This community has historically been a citrus-growing district famous for its unique "pineapple-orange" variety, named because of the orange's pineapple-like aroma. Gentle rolling farmland lies on either side of Old US Highway 301 as locals drive north through Citra. Proximity to Orange Lake and the vast open country gives locals plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. "You get out there into God's Country, there's plenty of fishing and hunting to do," says EXP Realtor Joe Brown, and the prevalence of horse farms gives locals the opportunity to see friendly horses on their walkabouts. Fitness enthusiasts can head to Wrigley Park, along US Highway 301, which offers massive baseball fields, a playground and a paved walking trail. Public school students are served by the Marion County Public School district, beginning their academic journeys at primary schools like Sparr Elementary. This school has an overall B-minus Niche rating and teaches from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions like North Marion Middle and High School. Both schools have at least an overall C-plus rating according to Niche.
