North Greenwood is a historically Black neighborhood north of downtown Clearwater that was once called “The Grove” for the orange orchards that covered the area before the turn of the 20th century. Between 1900 and 1960, the neighborhood transitioned from a farming community to a dense residential district with thriving small businesses. “A lot of Clearwater firsts happened here, like the first African American who was a public librarian, Miss Christine Morris,” says Sandra Rooks, co-author of the book “Clearwater, Florida.” A recession rocked the area during the latter half of the 20th century and continued into the 21st, but North Greenwood remains a close-knit, hopeful community. “We have a library, barber shops, beauty shops, a lot of churches and a community center, so we’re doing all right,” Rooks says. “The city is targeting the area for improvement, too, they’re offering all kinds of incentives to people to move in and open businesses here,” says Coldwell Banker Realtor Kirsten Kelley, who has more than 10 years of local real estate experience.
