The lakeside heart of Columbia, Maryland
The village of Wilde Lake sits in the heart of Columbia, Maryland’s first planned community designed and constructed in the 1960s. This city consists of ten villages, all intimately connected by paved walkways and centered around a mall that still serves as a premiere shopping destination for the state. Unique architecture and beautiful landscaping help define the Wilde Lake neighborhood, its residents delighting in serene walks around the namesake reservoir and in their proximity to all of Columbia’s shopping, restaurants and concert venues. With its excellent school district, regional accessibility and plentiful green space, Wilde Lake truly showcases Columbia’s balance of the natural, the commercial and the communal.

Columbia Contemporaries
Columbia is famous for its inventive architecture, and Wilde Lake is no exception. “There are a lot of strange homes around here,” says Realtor Karriem Hopwood, a lifelong Wilde Lake resident. “We call them Columbia Contemporaries. Specifically in Wilde Lake, there’s a unique row of townhouses right on the water. They sort of defy what a townhouse would cost and what an area home looks like.” Constructed largely in the 1970s, Columbia Contemporaries offer distinctive takes on many traditional styles. Post-modern townhouses and ranch-style homes with features like courtyards, balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows can be found alongside more conventional Colonial Revivals and mid-century split-levels. Townhouses can range from $264,000 to $750,000, while single-family homes tend to price between $684,000 and $750,000.

The lakes and bike paths of Columbia
The Wilde Lake community is based around its namesake water feature, a man-made reservoir stocked routinely with fish. Locals stand on the dam and cast lines into the murky water or lay blankets out beneath the ash trees and picnic next to the wildflowers. “Apart from Wilde Lake, which is the heart of the community, there’s Lake Kittamaqundi,” Hopwood says. Columbia is a famously walkable city, woven through with paved paths that connect all ten villages to one another. The Lake to Lake Trail weaves through the wooded subdivisions between Wilde Lake and Kittamaqundi, so residents can take the scenic route to the Columbia Lakefront when needing fresh air.

Unlimited options around Columbia Mall
Columbia is a central retail and dining hub of Howard County, and residents of Wilde Lake are poised to take full advantage of it. The Whole Foods at Lake Kittamaquindi is the nearest option for grocery shopping, located just across Little Patuxent Parkway from the Mall in Columbia. Since 1971, this mall has been a Howard County mainstay featuring over 200 retailers, attracting shoppers from all over Maryland. In recent years, the area around the mall has seen increased development. “My family has really been enjoying The Food Market,” Hopwood says. “It’s on that outside ring around the mall, where there have been tons of restaurants cropping up lately. And, of course, the Merriweather District is coming into its own, too, and that’s only about a mile down the road. My friend just opened the GameOn Bar and Arcade in Merriweather. There are so many good options that it’s tough to narrow it down.”

The amphitheater is routinely ranked among the nation’s best outdoor venues, and is surrounded by Symphony Woods, a popular destination in its own right. “Wine in the Woods is still a huge deal here,” Hopwood says. For over 30 years, Wine in the Woods has been one of Maryland’s largest wine festivals, drawing crowds from all over the state who mill about and sample local wine and craft beers while bands perform on either of the two available stages. Artists sell their work at vendor booths while visitors and locals alike delight in the scent of fresh crab cakes beneath the shady trees.
