How Carver Heights grew from history to renewed investment

Developed in the late 1940s as Columbus first Black middle-class suburb, Carver Heights offers a look at the city’s history. The neighborhood fell into disrepair as it aged, and thanks to community programs and renewed investment, renovations led to Carver Heights' renaissance. Organizations like the East Carver Heights Community Development Corporation have been helping to support families, provide resources and improve the well-being of Carver Heights.

Carver Heights features 1950s ranch styles and duplexes

The historically Black neighborhood sought to honor Columbus's African American population, providing them with access to homeownership, security, and community. Rolling pine shaded hills are lined with 1950s brick or panel ranch-style homes and bungalows. There is also a small collection of duplexes in the neighborhood's southeastern corner. Many homes still feature midcentury-style exterior elements, such as window awnings, carports, and small porches with white wrought-iron railings. Some homes feature screened-in porches or sunrooms.
