Downtown access meets riverfront trails and historic homes

With waterfront parks, wooded trails and historic homes close to downtown, Harrison West offers a downtown Columbus feel without giving up easy access to green space. Mostly residential with a cluster of businesses, the neighborhood has the Olentangy River on one side, with Victorian Village on the other. Being close to Columbus’ business district attracts homeowners looking for work that they could walk or bike to. Overall, it’s a spot that balances city energy with a quieter neighborhood vibe.

Historic styles and modern copycats define the housing mix

Homes are often framed by tidy boxwood hedges and tall elms, which give the well-used sidewalks a calm, shaded feel. John Kohlhepp, a Realtor with Keller Williams who's served the area for six years, says the neighborhood’s walkability naturally brings people together. "It's an easy place to build a community," he says.

Victorian, National and other Traditional homes from the early 1900s are most common, along with a sizeable number of late 20th-century homes designed to echo those classic styles. Older homes typically range from the low $300,000s to the high $500,000s, while newer versions often sell between the low $500,000s and the mid-$600,000s. The median price for a single-family home in Harrison West is in the low $500,000s, which puts it above nearby neighborhoods like Tri-Village and the Arena District, roughly on par with Victorian Village and relatively more affordable than Dennison Place, Short North and Grandview Heights.

"Our downtown population is expected to grow exponentially," says Jessica Ison, a Realtor with Ritchie Realty Group who was born and raised in Columbus. "There's still a lot of room for prices to go up, but right now it's still very affordable." Modern condos are also popular and often pair traditional exteriors with more contemporary interior layouts. These typically sell between the mid-$600,000s and the high $800,000s. Condos typically have monthly HOA fees that range from $150 to $250, and cover services like lawn care and trash removal.

A mix of Columbus City Schools and private options

Local students attend Columbus City Schools, the largest school district in Ohio. Older students can go to Whetstone High School, which is best known for its International Baccalaureate program and attracts families looking for a challenging, college-focused path. Nearby private options include The Goddard School of Grandview and St. Joseph Montessori School, and qualifying families can use the Ohio EdChoice Scholarship Program to help cover private school tuition. “I always say, you can’t go wrong with schools in Columbus,” says Ison. “They’ve got so much to offer.”

Green spaces range from dog parks to citywide trails

Even with downtown Columbus just minutes away, Harrison West still has plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy some fresh air:

  • Harrison Park is the neighborhood’s largest green space and includes a playground, a kayak launch and public art created by students from the Columbus College of Art and Design.
  • The Olentangy Greenway Trail runs nearby, winding past The Ohio State University campus and linking up with the Scioto Greenway, which offers more than 12 miles of multiuse trails across the city.
  • Wheeler Memorial Park is popular with dog owners, with separate areas for small and large dogs.
  • Goodale Park is just outside the neighborhood and hosts popular events like the Spring Tree Tour and summer Planting Day.

Walking, biking and transit make downtown commutes simple

Kohlhepp notes that streets and trails like the Olentangy Greenway Trail give residents solid options if they prefer to walk to work. “It’s a great place to live if you work downtown,” he says. Central Ohio Transit Authority bus routes run throughout downtown Columbus, making public transit an easy option for daily commutes. For longer drives, State Route 315, known locally as the Olentangy Freeway, provides quick access to the Interstate 270 beltway that loops around the city.

Popular neighborhood spots range from brunch to brews

Columbus takes pride in its locally owned restaurants, and several popular ones are within Harrison’s boundaries or about a mile away on North High Street:

  • Katalina’s is famous citywide for its Pancake Balls and its setting: a refurbished, century-old gas station.
  • Saucy Brew Works draws locals in the morning with their small-batch coffee, and in the evenings with their craft beers.
  • Service Bar at Middle West has upscale bar food and craft cocktails from spirits distilled in-house.
  • Zeno’s has been serving upscale bar food and playing the Columbus Blue Jackets on the TV since 1984.
