The Pastry War is one of the lesser-known military actions taken during the days when today’s state of Texas was actually an independent country called the Republic of Texas. It wasn’t a war in the traditional sense, but rather a sort of protest by the French naval personnel who were responding to the mistreatment of French citizens working in Mexico. Among those citizens were French pastry chefs, thus the name of the “war.” The French blockaded the coast of Mexico, which led to smugglers coming through South Texas to get goods to Mexico. That resulted in Texans coming in to break up the smuggling operations, and when the smugglers fled, they left behind about 100 barrels of flour. In honor of this treasure, the area came to be known as Flour Bluff.
“The Bluff,” as it is known to locals, is a virtual microcosm of the city of Corpus Christi, with residents (known as “Bluffians”) from just about every walk of life, but with one major thing in common: they all enjoy the peninsular location of the neighborhood. As it is bordered on three sides by water -- Oso Bay to the west, Corpus Christ Bay to the north and Laguna Madre to the east, Flour Bluff is a neighborhood for those who love being on the water. “It’s a very family-oriented area,” says local Realtor Morgan Furey. “A lot of families with young children will move there for the schools, which are very highly rated. But it’s definitely a diverse community.”
Highly rated schools
Students in the neighborhood are served by the Flour Bluff Independent School District, which earns an overall rating of A from Niche, and children can attend Flour Bluff Elementary, Flour Bluff Junior High and Flour Bluff High School. Flour Bluff Elementary earns a B-plus from Niche, and both Flour Bluff Junior High and Flour Bluff High earn an A-minus. Students at Flour Bluff High School can participate in any of 39 school-sponsored clubs, 22 different University Interscholastic League academic teams and 18 different varsity-level sports.
Plenty of outdoor activities
Several neighborhood parks offer ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Parker Park is a neighborhood favorite for families, as it offers access to a playground, a swimming pool, tennis courts and a walking path. Waldron Park is another popular spot, where visitors can utilize the playground or picnic tables, as well as test their luck fishing in the adjacent pond. And when they’re craving some beach time, residents need only drive 7 miles. Often referred to as The Gateway to Padre, Flour Bluff is connected to that island via the Kennedy Causeway, and residents of Flour Bluff can be on the beaches of North Padre Island in 10 minutes. “A lot of people in Flour Bluff will spend the day on Padre because it’s such a quick trip,” says Furey.
Diverse housing styles
Homes in Flour Bluff are as diverse as the population itself, with options ranging from cozy mobile homes to ranch-styles to spacious waterfront homes. The median home price here is just over $278,000, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $187 per square foot. A two-bedroom/one-bathroom mobile home can list for $129,000, and prices can go up to $4.5 million for a three-bedroom/three-bathroom Tudor-inspired home on a 20-acre lot. “It’s kind of a mixed bag,” says Furey. “Flour Bluff has traditionally been a sort of starter-home neighborhood, where people would buy for the schools and then leave when their kids graduated. But we’re seeing a lot of development there now, and it’s a very up-and-coming part of Corpus. And, of course, you have some magnificent homes on the south side that are huge houses with fantastic water views.”
Bait to burgers to Bitcoin
Despite being separated from “the mainland” by the causeway, residents of Flour Bluff don’t have to leave their peninsula for shopping or dining. Everything from bait to burgers to Bitcoin is available in the neighborhood. The centrally located H-E-B means residents don’t have to go far to pick up their groceries, and dining out options include The Lookout at Bluff’s Landing and Black Diamond Oyster Bar, two places that Furey identifies as local hotspots. For home necessities, Walmart Supercenter is located 8 miles to the west of the neighborhood, and more intensive retail therapy is available at The Shops at La Palmera, also about 8 miles west.
