"The district has exploded over the last ten years," says Thompson. "If you're going to a bar, you're running into your neighbors, and a lot of shop owners live locally." The district is home to the Kessler Theater, which, after nearly three decades of inactivity, the former movie house reopened in 2010 as a music venue featuring a heavy rotation of famous acts. "There is a huge sense of community in Oak Cliff," Thompson says. "Mardi Gras is the biggest annual event with a 5k on the same day."

Go swimming at Kidd Springs Park

Kessler kids may be a part of the Dallas Independent School District. Nearby is Rosemont Lower, educating preschool through third grade and Rosemont Upper, serving fourth through eighth grades.
