Former home to a Rock-and-Roll Hall of Famer
One of North Oak Cliff's most well-known residents, blues guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan, found his love for music when he lived in this neighborhood. The pride and joy of the area is forever remembered at Stevie Ray Vaughan Park, a couple of miles west down Jefferson Boulevard, featuring a realistic mural of Vaughan and his brother alongside a grassy knoll and a stage. Besides the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Famer once calling it home, North Oak Cliff offers homebuyers a variety of traditional, older houses on windy streets with lots of hills and areas with bushels of trees in an established, convenient location to downtown Dallas. Unlike Vaughan's hit song, the neighborhood residents rarely appear in a "Rude Mood." "Oak Cliff has front porch culture," Michael Mahon, with Dave Perry Miller Real Estate, says. "People hang out in their front yards and see their neighbors out walking their pets and wave or say hello to each other at the local grocery store."

Various architectural styles and older homes
A mix of full, towering trees with long branches flush with green leaves and small, decorative trees with bright-colored flowers line several streets in North Oak Cliffe. Narrow sidewalks between front yards and the road verge provide walking paths for locals to get some steps in but require someone to step off if two residents pass each other. Roads offer street parking while wide enough to accommodate traffic in both directions. Houses range from around $240,000 for a bungalow or craftsman-style home to more than $725,000 for historic Cape Cod and contemporary designs. One- and two-bedroom condos typically cost between $180,000 and $275,000, many just minutes from downtown Dallas near Interstate 30. "People who live there tend to stay there long-term and just appreciate what it has to offer," Mahon says.

Hamburgers and arcade games at Country Burger
North Oak Cliffe offers a variety of local restaurants and shops without having to travel far. Country Burger serves hamburgers alongside various arcade games and several decorative displays of Selena memorabilia with a drive-thru option. Cesar's Tacos offers around-the-clock Mexican food favorites in a no-frills setting outside a bright yellow building with red lettering. Tom Thumb and Savers Cost Plus Supermarket provides local options for groceries and everyday essentials. Big-name retailers require hopping in the car and leaving the neighborhood, with the nearest Walmart Supercenter about three miles east on Interstate 30 and the closest Target about seven miles northeast. The popular Bishops Art District neighborhood includes several additional shops and eateries just a few miles east.

Biking and hiking at Oak Cliff Nature Preserve
Parks and outdoor green spaces play a prominent role in the neighborhood. On the southern end of the neighborhood, Oak Cliff Nature Preserve provides 121 acres of green space in the middle of Dallas. Hikers and bikers take to the wooded dirt trails while bird enthusiasts and anyone looking to connect with nature soak in the surroundings. Nearby Kiest Park sits on nearly 180 acres of parkland, where athletes practice their swing at the softball complex and residents of all ages strive for new goals in the recreation center's fitness facilities. Hot summer days mean spending time in the water at Kidd Springs Aquatic Center, a public pool with several water slides and an aqua-blue climbing wall in the pool. Next to the pool, Kidd Springs Park's red playground equipment and a pond packed with geese and other birds provide a space to enjoy the sunshine.

Teenagers can attend Sunset High School, which also earns a C-plus. Sunset is the sixth oldest school in Dallas, having been around for nearly a century.

Take the DART to downtown Dallas
The DART Light Rail station on Illinois Avenue and Westmoreland Road offers an easy way to get around Dallas, with popular destinations like Southwest Center Mall and Wynnewood Village shopping center. The neighborhood is mostly walkable on the trails and sidewalks for leisure or visiting neighbors, but most errands require the rail station or a vehicle. Downtown Dallas is around six miles away to the east, while DFW International Airport is around 24 miles to the northwest. "It has all the convenience; one of the closest areas to downtown Dallas," Mahon says.
North Oak Cliff locals have multiple DART options to get around town.
