A peaceful neighborhood surrounded by nature
Wilburtie Corner is a peaceful residential neighborhood located in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The land here is part of New England's Farm Coast, a series of historic coastal villages, farms and vineyards. Residents live in charming dwellings inspired by the early 19th century, such as Cape Cods and colonial-style homes, and they enjoy spending time in the outdoors. "The south end of Dartmouth feels more rural and slow-paced compared to the north," says Molly Armando, a Realtor specializing in the South Coast of New England. "The area is next to a bunch of trails and Apponagansett Bay, so you feel like you're in this bubble of nature." Ellie Wickes, a Realtor with Sotheby's International Realty in Westport, agrees. "You're close to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, but it's not like the college is an integrated part of the neighborhood; it's still very much the farm coast." For shopping and dining, residents can head down to Padanaram, which has some of the best seafood, or go east into Bliss Corner. Wilburtie Corner is also close to the amenities in Downtown New Bedford, which is about a 5-mile drive away via Tucker Rd.
Walk on trails or swim at the beach
Residents are right by the DNRT (Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust) Star of the Sea Reserve. The area was used to mine sand and gravel in the past, but it has since been transformed into 43 acres of protected land. Visitors can traverse through different habitats during their hike, spotting wildlife, trees and various bodies of water. Wet and muddy parts of the trail are boarded, making them more accessible. At the end of the trail, hikers can enjoy scenic views of the marsh. Two miles away is the Apponagansett Beach, a small waterfront overlooking Apponagansett Bay. Though small, the beach has plenty of amenities to enjoy, such as its food trucks, playground and Wednesday Concert series. Armando recommends going to the beach during the week to avoid crowding in the summer.
Homes with New England architecture
There's a mix of housing here. Some of the most common styles are bungalows, Cape Cods and colonial-inspired homes that come with a driveway and garage space. Most sit on green lots shaded by Black Cherry and Red Maple trees. "There's a lot of cute single-story homes and your classic New England architecture," Armando says. "The majority are year-round, single-family residences; people tend to settle down here." Prices start at $390,000 and go up to $750,000 for newly renovated properties. There are no sidewalks, but residents frequently walk or bike around the neighborhood due to how much space there is.
Attending the Dartmouth Public Schools
The schools here fall within the Dartmouth Public Schools System. Joseph DeMello Elementary enrolls nearly 400 students in grades one through five and receives a B-plus overall from Niche. The population doubles in size at Dartmouth Middle School, which has over 800 students enrolled in Grades 6-8. It also receives a B-plus. Dartmouth High is the largest and highest-rated school: It has over 1000 students in attendance and earns an A-minus overall. The school is located on the neighborhood's west side and is known for its strong music department. The marching band, concert band, jazz band and orchestra have all placed in national competitions. The neighborhood is also close to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, about a 6-mile drive away.
Shopping and dining near Wilburtie Corner
Armando says some of the best shopping and dining options are in Padanaram, a coastal neighborhood less than 3 miles away. The area has several locally owned boutiques, cafes and restaurants. She recommends the Sail Loft, a beach-themed restaurant offering New American dishes with live-music performances: "It's a great place to drop by with your family or friends; the seafood is delicious. It's owned by a local who also operates a bunch of restaurants in New Bedford." Another option closer to home is Prestige Pizza Sub and Ice Cream, a little spot serving comfort foods like chicken tenders and grilled cheese. Farm & Coast Market offers farm-to-table produce and other groceries.
Towns less than 5 miles away
Since no public transportation options are nearby, residents rely on cars to get around. Wilburtie Corner is close to several towns, such as Padanaram and New Bedford, which are both less than a 5-mile drive away. Residents take Russells Mills Rd and Tucker Rd to access these areas. The nearest major city is Providence, about a 30-mile drive away via Interstate 195.
Crime
Wilburtie Corner's crime score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. This means crime rates as a whole here are well below the average in the U.S.
