The wide suburban streets curve around the rolling hills, passing parks and an 18-hole public golf course. The CAP Index crime score for Northeast Tacoma is a 2 out of 10, which is half the national average.

Puget Sound beach hikes and pickleball at Norpoint
Northeast Tacoma has several areas for outdoor recreation. Norpoint Park is a nearly 20-acre space with a skate park, playground and walking trails. Beside it is the Center at Norpoint, where residents can swim, play pickleball or come for community events, including the Thanksgiving 5K and a winter ball for seniors. The public 18-hole North Shore Golf Course rests at the center of the community. Golfers can come for a casual game or take lessons. There are more than 600 boat slips at the nearby Tyee Marina in Commencement Bay. Just north of the neighborhood is the 461-acre Dash Point State Park, which offers space for camping and picnicking, as well as miles of forested trails for hiking and biking. The trails meander to a sandy beach along the Puget Sound.

Residents can run errands at the shopping center on 49th Avenue Northeast, where there is a QFC grocery store and a Walgreens pharmacy. There are a few dining spots as well, including Pimienta Bistro and Bar, which specializes in Latin American and European cuisine. On the western of the community is the Cliff House Restaurant, an long-standing restaurant which serves lobster tails and ribeye. Its large picture windows offer views of Commencement Bay and, on a clear day, Mount Ranier. Big-box stores like WinCo Foods and Costco are a few miles east.

Some homes overlook the Puget Sound
Evergreens and dense vegetation line Northeast Tacoma's winding streets, and sidewalks flank the main roads. Throughout the area, there are pockets of midcentury ranches and late-1900s split levels, which usually sit on modest, grassy lots and have garages. These established suburban homes generally sell from around $400,000 to $700,000. Buyers may also find some large, new traditional and Craftsman-style residences that were built more recently. Some overlook the sound, and others have more spacious lots with pools or tennis courts. Listings for post-2000 builds may range from $600,000 to $2.5 million, depending on size and features. There are also a few condos and townhouses, which generally sell between $400,000 and $500,000.

Stadium High offers Advanced Placement and dual-credit classes
Northeast Tacoma children are served by Tacoma Public School, a district that earns a B Niche rating. The community is zoned for three different elementary schools, and depending on a student's address, they might attend Crescent Heights Elementary, rated a B-plus, Browns Point Elementary, which has an A-minus or the B-rated Northeast Tacoma Elementary. Meeker Middle School receives a B rating, and Stadium High School gets an A-minus. At Stadium High, more than 90% of students are enrolled in at least one Advanced Placement or dual-credit course. They earn college credits through University of Washington, Central Washington University or Eastern Washington University. Nearby private options include the Seabury School, an A-plus-rated elementary and middle school that specializes in gifted education.

Travel to Tacoma, Seattle and beyond
Northeast Tacoma has a suburban feel, but its location allows for commutes to both Tacoma and Seattle. Downtown Tacoma is about 10 miles away, and residents can get there via state Route 509 or by catching a King County bus at one of the neighborhood stops. Interstate 5 runs along the community's southern edge, and it connects drivers to Seattle, around 30 miles north. "The area is great for commuters because it's right on the main artery of Puget Sound region," says Danny Altizer, a Realtor and managing broker with Mosaic Realty. The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is a 15-mile drive, and it offers direct flights to more than 20 countries. The closest hospital is St. Francis Hospital, less than 5 miles east.

Environmental concerns
During the dry season, western Washington is prone to wildfires, and the smoke can drift into the Tacoma area, causing poor air quality. Homeowners should also be aware that earthquakes are a potential risk. Commencement Bay is under restoration due to the effects of long-term pollution. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is working with the bay's industries to reverse the damage. Fishermen are not advised to eat their catches, as fish may contain high levels of mercury.
