Springwells Dearborn blends preserved history and livability
As the home site of Springwells Park — established by Henry Ford’s son, Edsel, in 1939 — Springwells Dearborn has gone from a local community put in place for Ford factory workers to a blossoming suburb where residents can live, work and play. Since being designated Dearborn’s first-ever National Historic District, Springwells is showing just how far it’s come as a community. “Places like Springwells were developed around factories and factory work, and the people who lived there did so because of that,” says Harrison R. Duke, a Detroit-born and raised historian. “Since Henry Ford’s son established Springwells, most of its residents were Ford employees and the housing was catered to the Ford staff and their families. It can be less expensive, which makes living out there very attractive to those who choose to. The school system is also a little bit better than Detroit’s.”
Tudor and bungalow homes set in a vibrantly colorful area
Colorful and detailed murals can be found throughout the area, making the neighborhood come alive with stories to be told. Aztec-influenced artwork can be found throughout the town, and the area homes tell their own stories. Known for its stunning Tudor-style homes, the community is filled with them, each one slightly different from the next and adding its own touch to the neighborhood. Cul-de-sacs full of cozy bungalows bring a more intimate vibe, while brick and stone ranch-style homes display sprawling and well-maintained lawns. Larger two-story residences are scattered throughout the community, including some American Foursquares with tree-dotted yards and private walkways to the entrance. These three- and four-bedroom homes tend to range from the $100,000s to the $300,000s, with some larger homes reaching the $500,000s.
Students attend public schools with hands-on activities
As part of the Dearborn City School District, students can attend Geer Park Elementary School and Stout Middle School as they prepare for studies at Edsel Ford High School. The home of Thornley Court — an onsite nature preserve where students care for animals that include turtles, geese and peacocks — Edsel Ford holds an overall Niche grade of B-minus. Stout Middle also has a B-minus, while Geer Elementary has a C-plus.
Indoor and outdoor venues provide recreation in every season
Whether it’s the vibrantly painted sports courts or the leaves on the trees that change colors with the seasons, Clark Park crawls with color that catches the eye during outdoor activities. Play and practice areas for pickleball, tennis and basketball make for fun and enjoyable pickup games, while winding walkways make it easy to get those steps in with furry friends. At the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, indoor rec reigns as the venue features a fitness center, swimming pool and multipurpose gymnasium, all indoors, which is perfect for the wintertime.
For a fun-filled weekend with friends, the massive TPC Michigan Golf Club is located right in the community, featuring amenities like the Golden Bear Lounge with simulated golf, the Grill that provides a top-notch dining experience and a signature golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus that has hosted 16 PGA and Senior PGA golf events.
Local Mexican grocery stores and cuisine
Keeping the love of colorful décor and cultural appreciation going, E & L Supermercado is a favorite local Mexican grocery store that has everything to fill the fridge and pack the pantry at home. Located right inside the grocery store is the brand’s taqueria, serving freshly made tacos on the spot.
SMART buses connect Dearborn to downtown Detroit and the airport
