Superb schools and an easy commute from Deerfield

Deerfield sits less than 6 miles from the shores of Lake Michigan, a short drive to the beaches of Highland Park. “It’s a vibrant North Shore community with great services, an amazing school district, lots of parks and an engaged community,” says David Fitzgerald-Sullivan, a Communications Coordinator for the Village of Deerfield. “We have great highway access, so, it’s easy to get to where you want to go if you need to leave town — which you won’t even want to do.” It's home to about 19,000 residents and the Walgreens headquarters, and while residents often commute into Chicago for work, they return to the village for community and amenities, from events at Jewett Park to rounds of golf at one of the nearby courses.

Townhomes and condos are also available in communities like Manor Homes of Deerfield. The median housing price in Deerfield is about $600,000, higher than the national median. “The real estate is affordable compared to the neighboring towns,” says Broker Alan Berlow with Coldwell Banker Commercial. “The amount of the land is the same, but you get more house in Deerfield as opposed to the neighboring suburbs.” Additionally, residents looking for even more space can find custom-built homes in neighborhoods like Woodland and Briarwood , often selling for $1 to $3 million. Property and violent crime rates here are lower than the national and Illinois rates.

Living within walking distance of a Deerfield park

While Deerfield might not have its own access to Lake Michigan, it makes up for it with its neighborhood and city parks. “All of the residential homes are around a half mile from a city park, so you can just walk to find a city park,” Berlow says. Jewett Park is right by one of the city’s shopping centers, offering walking paths around the skatepark, playground and baseball diamond. On top of its own playground and baseball field, Jaycee Memorial Park includes a fenced-in dog park, while across the street, Floral Park’s Mitchell Pool is open seasonally. Deerfield also has two golf facilities — Briarwood Country Club and Deerfield Golf Club and Learning Center.

Deerfield Square's local restaurants and grocery stores

Deerfield Square acts like the village’s downtown, hosting events and festivals there or at the nearby Jewett Park. It’s also a prime location for dining and shopping, home to numerous restaurants and a Whole Foods Market. Down Waukegan Road, Deerbrook Shopping Center offers more local restaurants, big box stores and a Jewel-Osco. Just outside village borders, Northbrook Court is a nearby shopping mall with high-end retailers like Prada and Louis Vuitton, as well as the AMC Northbrook movie theater.

Deerfield's two Metra stations and bus service

Pace bus services are limited but can help residents get around Deerfield’s town center. Thoroughfares like Waukegan, Deerfield and Lake Cook roads can help motorists get around the rest of the village and beyond. While major employers like Walgreens and Baxter are on the village's western side, residents can also take Interstate 94 to commute to downtown Chicago, about 28 miles south. Commuters can also hop on one of the two Metra stations in the village, both along the Milwaukee District North line — Deerfield Station at Deerfield Square and Lake Cook Road Station at Deerbrook Shopping Center. When it snows in the winter, the village starts plowing after two inches of snow has accumulated.
