Stately home and prominent neighbors
The historic district of Boston Edison sits a few miles north of downtown Detroit. The community is known for its extensive array of stately homes and the prominent residents who have lived in them over the years, such as Henry Ford and Ty Cobbs. One of the most iconic houses in the district is the Motown Mansion, an Italianate estate built in 1917 and the longtime home of music executive Berry Gordon. "In Boston Edison, there are large, sprawling houses with big yards and original ornamentation. If these houses were in a neighborhood like Bloomfield Hills, they would sell for millions," says Ashley Mann, a Realtor with @Properties Christie International who grew up near the neighborhood. "The neighbors are a mix of generational owners, longtime residents and people who have bought homes recently. They are all passionate about living here."

A range of well-designed homes
The neighborhood was designed by Edward Voight and is known for its different architectural styles, including Greek Revival, Romanesque, Tudor Revival, Italian Renaissance and others. Homes here sit back from wide, tree-lined streets. Sidewalks throughout the neighborhood beckon dog walkers and strollers. Local high has a law club
Detroit Public Community Schools serve the neighborhood. Students can attend Spain Elementary-Middle School, which has a C-minus rating from Niche and a 13-1 student-teacher ratio. Area students may attend Cass Technical High School, which has a B-plus rating. In 2023, Michigan State University launched a law club at the high school to help students understand how our democracy works and what role they can play in it.

Parks, playgrounds and picnics
Voigt Park is a 7-acre green space located within Boston Edison. The shady respite is ideal for quiet walks or a picnic with friends or family. Gordon Park is also part of the community; the little park features playground equipment, picnic tables and a pavilion. Just outside the neighborhood, McDuffy Park was established in 2021. The green space includes a paved walkway, playground equipment and a horseshoe pit.

Fashion shops and four-cheese macaroni
Since some say Boston Edison is at the heart of Detroit, it only makes sense that there are plenty of shopping and dining options available. The Fisher Building is 3 miles away. The repurposed skyscraper is now home to fashion shops, restaurants, office space and a theater. Yama sells upscale women’s apparel. Nearby grocery stores include Whole Foods, Family Foods and King Cole Foods.
The neighborhood also has dozens of good restaurants within walking distance. The Congregation Coffee Shop is in a former church. With its arched ceilings and expansive windows, the coffee and the venue make for an uplifting experience. Outdoor seating is just across the street from Gordon Playground. Just a block from the neighborhood, The Wright Kitchen features a four-cheese macaroni and blackberry peach cobbler that are local favorites.

Things to do and places to see
In August, many residents head to Woodward Avenue to catch the Woodward Dream Cruise, the world’s largest auto festival. The event brings in more than 1 million people to participate or watch as 40,000 cars slowly drive from one end of the city to the other. It’s Motor City’s annual tribute to classic cars and cruising. Head down to Hart Plaza in September for the world’s biggest free jazz festival. For more than 4 decades, the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation has put on this celebration of Detroit’s rich history and top talents in jazz music. The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament is adjacent to Boston Editon. The structure was built between 1913 and 1930. The Norman Gothic-style church features two spires and an organ with 1,745 pipes. The Cathedral serves as the archdiocese for Detroit. The Detroit Zoo is a favorite place for big and small locals. Located in the suburban town of Ferndale, the zoo is home to more than 200 species of animals.
