Located just west of downtown Detroit, Corktown has a charismatic, artistic undercurrent, creating an identity all its own. Michigan Central Station, a former transportation hub, has recently reopened as a mixed-use space dedicated to mobility solutions, attracting significant investment to the area. Corktown is very walkable with bike lanes and good public transit.

Music festivals in Corktown
Local events and festivals are abundant in Corktown, no matter the season. Corktown Races is one of the largest 5k races in Michigan; it hosts a costume contest with proceeds benefitting the Saint Patrick's Day Senior Center Food Program. The Corktown Music Festival regularly hosts over 70 different musical acts. Corktown Sounds, an outdoor music festival featuring local street musicians, typically takes place in July and August.

Sidewalks make this a pedestrian-friendly part of Detroit. Plus, “it’s not a highly polluted area; the pollution here is the norm for any city,” Morrow says. “It’s very vibrant, but not noisy. It’s calm enough to still raise a family.” Turn-of-the-century homes have old, charming features like fireplaces as well as modern necessities like dishwashers. Prices range from $275,000 for a one-bedroom Colonial Revival to $600,000 for a four-bedroom Victorian with a grand staircase. Apartments and lots are also available at a wide range of price points.

Renovated parks & green spaces near Detroit River
The Corner Ballpark was once the site of the historic Tiger Stadium and is a beloved staple in the community. Other parks include Dean Savage Memorial Park and the Murphy Playlot, the ideal place to picnic while kids play on the playground. Corktown also includes the recently renovated Roosevelt Park and the Southwest Greenway, which links it to surrounding communities and the riverfront.

Proximity to downtown & Interstate 75
Michigan Avenue runs through the center of the neighborhood and leads straight into downtown Detroit, just a few blocks away. Major improvements are scheduled for this road starting in 2024. But it is already highly efficient, with SMART buses running continuously and a rail service that goes downtown. Within walking distance of Corktown is Wayne County Community College’s downtown campus. There is easy access to Interstate 75 and 96 from Corktown. The closest hospital is DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, less than 4 miles away. There are train tracks in the western portion of the community. Residents may experience overhead air traffic from Windsor International Airport in Ontario, Canada, just over the Detroit River.
Making the grade at Detroit public schools
There are many public and private schools in the area. Corktown students may attend Burton International Academy, which serves students through Grade 8, as well as Northwestern High School. Alternatively, Detroit Public Safety Academy is a public charter school that prepares the next generation of first responders, serving Grades 9 through 12. These three public schools are rated C-minus on Niche.
